AB - This paper will present methods of protection and presentation, i.e., conservation-restoration approaches, applied to the remains of wall paintings found within the archaeological site of Viminacium, from the Roman period, that have been applied since 2006. The material was conserved in the conservation and restoration studio on the site itself by conservators and associates of the Institute of Archaeology, while in the previous period it was carried out by the conservators of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments of Serbia – Belgrade. The found paintings diered in their degree of preservation, which gave rise to the reasons for the chosen method of conservation and presentation. The presentation of one of the found painted graves and the partially preserved painted composition on one of the walls of the city baths enabled the preservation of examples of painting in its original context, providing visitors with a unique experience. Viminacium is one of the few archaeological sites in Serbia where conservators pay special attention to fragmented wall paintings, and to the restoration of the units that the fragments formerly created.

With the help of conservation works carried out on the fragments of the painting, several units were obtained that can allow us to see what the wall decoration looked like in a historical environment. Some of the fragments throughout the presentation remained unrelated to the context from which they originate, so the contribution of hypothetical reconstructions carried out by restorers as well as the use of modern digital technologies is important for their comprehension. The aim of the work being done by conservators in Viminacium since 2006 is, therefore, that all the remains of the wall paintings of Viminacium are physically preserved and protected, but also that their artistic content, materials and production technology are in some way visible outside the space of the studio, that is presented to other researchers and conservators, as well as the museum audience.

AB - During the archaeological research of the Church of St. Nicholas, in Baljevac, Serbia, fragments of wall
paintings were found in Pit no. 1, located in the nave area. The fragments were determined to be from the
second phase of the construction of the church (13th century). Several fragments of different and pure tones
were selected to examine the composition of the mortar and pigments, as well as the painting technique.
Analytical techniques and the results obtained by their use during the examination of the selected fragments
are presented in this paper. With a suitable selection of analytical techniques, all the pigments that
had been used were identified, the chemical composition of the mortar determined and a parallel made
with the materials analysed so far from wall paintings from similar periods. The importance of modern archaeometric
tests in modern conservation-restoration practice is highlighted and guidelines for continuing
research are presented.

AB - This paper focuses on the remains of wall paintings from residences of
the area of antique Viminacium (capital of Roman province of Upper Moesia). The
largest number of specimens comes from the residences researched during the reexcavations
in 2007 at the site of Čair, while a smaller portion comes from the public
bath (thermae) and amphitheater. Detailed analysis of the fragments of wall painting
showed that these buildings were once meticulously maintained since the materials
show traces of renovation. These fragments revealed an entirely new image of plaster
composition, which differs significantly from that found in the funerary painting of
Viminacium. Highly polished surfaces of certain specimens, as well as possible figurative
representations, indicate luxurious buildings which were in use during the 2nd and
3rd century.

Act locally, think globally: Late antique funerary painting from the territory of present-day Serbia

AB - During Late Antiquity the territory of present day Serbia was part of the Roman Empire and was included in the prefecture of Illyricum. This area is well-known not only as the homeland of several Roman Emperors, but as a border territory on the Danube limes situated on the crossroads of important ancient communication routes that enabled the encounters of various cultures, cults and religious beliefs coming from east and west. Tombs and graves with wall paintings have been discovered in several Roman necropoleis at Viminacium, belonging to the period between the 3rd and 4th century. These sepulchral paintings represent an exceptional body of evidence regarding the artistic tendencies and achievements in the Roman provinces, since monumental painted art is usually not preserved due to the destruction of its architectural supports. However, discovered fragments testify that painted decoration also existed in both private residences and public buildings of at Viminacium, such as the baths or the amphitheatre, during the periods preceding Late Antiquity, when there was also an active artistic production in funerary painting. This paper will analyse some of the most popular and widely represented motifs, in order to trace various influences on their iconography and style as well as certain compositional solutions. Graves and tombs were sacred spaces in Roman culture, and masonry funerary structures with wall paintings were no exception. Their architectural structure and painted decoration testify to the social status, often also the origin and religious thoughts of the deceased. This space was important for the deceased due to its meaning as eternal dwelling in the world of death, as well as for their living loved ones during the subsequent ritual practices.

Funeral banquet, procession or an offering scene – a few remarks on Roman provincial painting

AB - Research on Roman funerary painting is inevitably associated with the
reminiscences of real-life events – customs, practices and rites, and shaped by
the overall concept of the philosophy of death and artistic traditions. In the
case of provincial funerary painting, specific, local interpretations have been
noticed so far that often lead toward a simplification of the known patterns and
developed models, as well as the stronger influence of symbolism. Because of
this local comprehension of artistic solutions and pictorial content, scenes with
figural motifs of servants depicted with various gifts to the deceased need to
be elaborated and explained through the lens of a dual perspective on funeral
rites of the time. The basis for this research are scenes from the territory of
today’s Serbia, which are compared to ichnographically or symbolically rendered
scenes mostly known from the Eastern Mediterranean.

AB - This paper deals with the re-conservation of an old conserved unit and the new iconographic analysis of a wall painting that was kept in the Museum of Srem's (Sremska Mitrovica, Serbia) storage depot. Experts from the Provincial Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments started but did not finish the reconstruction in the 1990s, which has led to its further deterioration. Their conservation and restoration work on these fragments were extensive and offered a wealth of extraordinary technological and iconographic information.

sedamdesetih i osamdesetih godina 20. veka.
godine predstavljaju deo obimnih
zaštitnih radova koji su uslovljeni
izgradnjom trećeg bloka Termoelektrane
Kostolac B (sl. 1). Lokacija
se nalazi približno 600 m južno
od bedema grada Viminacijuma
(sl. 2). Veliki problem predstavljalo
je to što je osamdesetih godina
prošlog veka izvršena nivelacija terena
koja je u velikoj meri uništila
kulturni sloj i otežala sagledavanje
situacije.

the arena. Th ese objects are one of the symbols of the Antique civilisation, and gladiator fights

amphi theatres were built in Southern Italy, and with the spreading of the Roman state they were
erected in various areas, most prominently in urban centres and in the vicinity of military fortresses. In cases when they were built by the state in newly conquered areas, they represented a manifestation
of the Romanisation; however, they were also built by prominent individuals, in order to
increase their personal gain. According to their architectural properties, they can be divided into
wooden and masonry amphitheatres, those located on flat terrain or leaning onto natural slopes and
artificial mounds, and there are also certain
objects of specific shape which have all the

AB - During the last decade, laboratory research of different types of ancient Viminacium lime mortars was conducted. It included research of core, bedding, pointing and rendering mortars with or without paintings, originating from the amphitheatre, the small structures beneath its auditorium and the city wall surrounding it, but also from the graves excavated near the Mausoleum central burial structure. Results of the research have led to a variety of discussions regarding the materials used for mortar preparation in Viminacium, but also about its preparation technology. One of the discussions was connected to the possible hydraulicity of Viminacium mortars.

AB - Previous scientific research of the Roman tomb in the village of Brestovik, on the
Danube near Belgrade, was focused on its architectural structure. The painted decoration
is described in detail only in the work of Mihailo Valtrović, who recorded
what he saw during excavations at the end of the 19th century. Although there is an
assumption that all the rooms of the tomb were once painted, today the decoration
exists only in the room with graves, and in a very poor state of preservation.
Discussed in this paper is the treatment of space in the wall painting of the tomb,
with the use of imitations of architectural techniques and elements. Apart from the
imitation of the opus sectile technique on the walls of the tomb, as well as the coffered
ceiling painted on its vault, special attention will be devoted to the three-dimensional
presentation of the beams on the walls, since in the ancient painting in the territory
of today’s Serbia, it has been found only in the tomb in Brestovik.

AB - This paper addresses the technological and iconographic aspects of the wall painting
of tomb 3130. The tomb differs from most tombs with preserved wall painting in Viminacium
by its vaulted architectural construction. During the conservation of the
wall painting in 2017, significant technological and iconographic conclusions were
reached. An attempt was made to identify the stone panels of the lateral sides and the
motifs on the frontal sides of the tomb by iconographic interpretation.

Viminacium’s painting officina

AB - The archaeological research of Viminacium, the biggest city of the Roman provinces of
Moesia Superior and Moesia Prima in Late Antiquity, (which has been in progress for
over a century) resulted in numerous exceptional finds among which were wall paintings.
The Viminacium officina was active from the 2nd to the 5th century AD, and works of art
different by their topics as well as by the quality of production originated from it.
The wall paintings come from different locations; in this paper, those from public buildings – the Amphitheatre and Thermae – as well as tomb painting, will be presented. The
heritage of the officina of Viminacium can be understood through the painting of the Late
Antique tombs (built between the 3rd and 5th centuries). In the area of the city necropolis of
Viminacium, over thirty painted tombs were found. This paper will present a review of the
painting of the tombs with trapezoidal section.
Both the unpublished and the already published examples will be analysed in order to
present new conclusions. The archaeometric research, as well as the visual observation, prove
that certain tombs originated from the same painting officina.

Some examples of wall paintings from Sirmium

AB - A large number of wall paintings discovered in Sirmium testify about the luxurious decoration
of this important Roman city, once situated in the province of Pannonia Inferior. Its
remains lie under the present-day town of Sremska Mitrovica, making it the richest archaeological site in Serbia regarding wall paintings. The paintings originate from thirteen different
sites, being discovered in Roman private and public buildings, but also in the imperial
palace complex and many tombs.
Motifs in Sirmium wall paintings are diverse. Apart from the great number of anthropomorphic images that characterize Sirmium workshop, images of animals (horses, dolphins
and birds) can also be seen in the paintings. Among the presented objects and structures,
one can see different architectural constructions and decorations (candelabra, coffered ceilings,
transennas, medallions, astragals, ovolos, jewels), but also various geometric decorations,
as well as imitations of marble. Vegetative motifs include stylized grapevine, ivy leaves,
flowers, branches, trees, garlands and shrubs.
The Sirmium workshop operated during the period from the 2nd until the end of the
4th century. Analogous examples can be seen in the paintings originating from the provinces
of Pannonia Inferior, Italia, Gallia Narbonensis, Germania Superior, Noricum, and
Pannonia Superior, but also in the wall paintings from the tombs found in Thessalonica
(Provincia Macedoniae) and the residential objects in Ephesus (Asia).

Many of the pictorial elements and principles used played a symbolic role in the content or narrative context. Since the painting of the above-ground structures of ancient Viminacium is preserved only as fragments, the similar use of line, space, and colour, or balance, rhythm, and proportion in tomb paintings could be useful for the future reconstruction and understanding of the particular styles of the artists who were based in Viminacium.

common characteristic – they are all rendered on a white intonaco background1 (fig.

intonaco background. The predominant colors are mostly bright, and the white
intonaco background is visible. Apart from the results obtained in the course of the

AB - Among the fragments of Sirmium wall paintings from the Museum of Srem in Sremska Mitrovica,
Serbia, there are those on which elements of architectural structures, otherwise performed in stone and stucco as differently shaped decorations, as well as whole building entities, are depicted. They originate from private and public buildings dated to the period from the 2nd to the 4th century AD. The most interesting one is the architectural scene with a kantharos, which has not been fully restored yet. Its importance lies in the fact that no Roman wall paintings with architectural scenes have been found in the territory of Serbia, or at least have not been published until now.

The Role of Brick in Hydraulicity of Viminacium Mortars: Decorative Mortars from the Thermae

AB - The hydraulicity of the Viminacium mortars is still somewhat unknown, but with laboratory analyses, performed on a small number of samples, and similar research performed worldwide, some conclusions can be drawn. These bring us closer to this topic, which again contribute to our becoming acquainted with the Viminacium building materials, their usage, behaviour in constructions and their mutual relationships. Throughout history, artificial products of soil, specifically bricks and ceramics, represent some of
the most commonly used materials with pozzolanic features in the creation of hydraulic lime mortars.
In accordance with their function, the Viminacium thermae represent a place with high levels of humidity in the air and water in a large number of rooms, thereby representing a suitable example for analysing the use of hydraulic mortars, which above all needed to be waterproof. This was achieved with the use of bricks, a material produced locally in Viminacium.
Fragmentarily preserved remains of wall paintings from the Viminacium thermae are not only numerous and various, but they spatially also include almost all parts of the building. This paper includes the remains of decorative mortars discovered during archaeological research in 2004 and 2007 that had bricks in their structure, which was confirmed with a visual review of mortar cross-sections when brick was used in fragments. It was also suspected due to the reddish colour of some of the layers, most likely connected to the use of brick dust.

AB - The tomb G-160, known as the 'Tomb with Cupids', was discovered in 2003, during the excavations at the Pirivoj - Viminacium necropolis. The tomb has a trapezial section, characteristic for Viminacium tombs of the late antique period, and its interior was painted using the fresco technique. Scenes and motives are set on all four walls of the tomb. Since the western wall is damaged, the tomb is named after the depiction of cupids on the eastern wall. The wealth of the iconographic repertoire, together with an analysis of the geometry and symmetry, allowed the reconstruction of the conceptual context and it can be concluded that the tomb was dedicated to Venus, or Dionysus. The tomb painting could be dated to the beginning of the 4th century, owing to the analysis of the style, which combines an eclectic Eastern expressionism, classicism and illusionism of the Constantine era.
