A large number of wall paintings discovered in Sirmium testify about the luxurious decoration
of this important Roman city, once situated in the province of Pannonia Inferior. Its
remains lie under the present-day town of Sremska Mitrovica, making it the richest archaeological site in Serbia regarding wall paintings. The paintings originate from thirteen different
sites, being discovered in Roman private and public buildings, but also in the imperial
palace complex and many tombs.
Motifs in Sirmium wall paintings are diverse. Apart from the great number of anthropomorphic images that characterize Sirmium workshop, images of animals (horses, dolphins
and birds) can also be seen in the paintings. Among the presented objects and structures,
one can see different architectural constructions and decorations (candelabra, coffered ceilings,
transennas, medallions, astragals, ovolos, jewels), but also various geometric decorations,
as well as imitations of marble. Vegetative motifs in...clude stylized grapevine, ivy leaves,
flowers, branches, trees, garlands and shrubs.
The Sirmium workshop operated during the period from the 2nd until the end of the
4th century. Analogous examples can be seen in the paintings originating from the provinces
of Pannonia Inferior, Italia, Gallia Narbonensis, Germania Superior, Noricum, and
Pannonia Superior, but also in the wall paintings from the tombs found in Thessalonica
(Provincia Macedoniae) and the residential objects in Ephesus (Asia).
