It is well known that in the past builders mainly relied on the use of local material resources, especially when it comes to the construction of buildings dedicated to the everyday life of the common man. However, the greater importance, i.e. the public nature of the building, or the higher social status of its owner, were the reasons that certain elements of the buildings were constructed from materials originating from distant places. This fact can today be the key to understanding the origin and character of the construction, trade, and transport of various building materials, as well as other elements of the related past. On the other hand, turbulent times in the history of a settlement often brought with them the destruction of the previously built structures, which later became the resources of building material. In this way, a sort of circulation of the material over time has been established.
