The Results of Archaeological Research in the South Tower of the West Gate of Later Fortification of Felix Romuliana
Abstract
Eastern Serbia is famous for its complex of the imperial palace Felix Romuliana and memorial – funeral monuments on the Magura Hill, built by Emperor Galerius at the beginning of the 4th century, inscribed on the List of the World Cultural Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 2007. Systematical archaeological investigations of the Late Roman fortified imperial place at Gamzigrad had started in distant 1953. These excavations were con ducted until 1967 by the Institute of Archaeology of Serbian Academy of Sciences and Art (SASA), under the direction of Đorđe Mano Zisi and Đorđe Starčević. From 1970 the director was academian Dragoslav Srejovic and investigations were conducted by the Committee for archaeology of SASA, and from 1997 coordinator of the project has become the director of the Institute of Archaeology
