New Byzantine seals from Morava (Margum) and Braničevo

AB  - The authors present new finds of Byzantine lead seals at Morava (Margum),
   Braničevo and the broader area around them. The seals from Morava and
   Braničevo were unearthed in the course of archaeological excavations, which
   make these finds particularly important. Significant among them is the seal
   from Morava, which belonged to Symeon (?), magister and logothete of the
   dromos, from the end of the tenth century, which indicates the presence of
   Byzantine officials in Morava and the establishment of Byzantine authority
   along the north-western Danubian border following the fall of the Bulgarian
   empire in 971. Three new seals from Braničevo complement the list of
   Byzantine officials in connection with the events on the Danubian border in
   the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The seals found in the broader area of
   Brani~evo should also be added to this list. Of particular significance among
   them is the seal of Georgios Palaiologos Doukas Komnenos, megas
   hetaireiarches, a well known historical figure involved in events in Hungary,
   Serbia and on the Danubian border in the 1160s.

The Jonah Sarcophagus from Singidunum: A Contribution to the Stydy of Early Christian Art in the Balkans

AB  - The subject of the paper is the so-called Jonah sarcophagus from Singidunum (Belgrade). The sarcophagus belongs to the pagan, Pannonian type sarcophagi that were often decorated with Noric-Pannonian scrolls. What makes it unique in the region of Moesia is its relief decoration on the front side. In the field usually used for an inscription, one finds carved scenes from the Old Testament story of Jonah and the Good Shepherd. The sarcophagus is considered in the context of the growing Early Christian community in Singidunum and surrounding area. At that time, Singidunum was already a growing Episcopal seat and witnessing the formation of cults of early martyrs. The iconography is discussed in close proximity with analogous images of Early Christian art that may have impacted the development of its iconographic program.

All-Seeing Helios in the Adultery of Venus: the Image and Contex in Roman art and its Christian Afterlife

AB  - This paper examines the role of Helios as an all-seeing deity in scenes of the adultery of Venus and Mars based on classical literary sources and mythological reliefs in Roman funerary art, and also elucidates its afterlife in Christianity. Few Roman examples survive that explicitly show this act of infidelity, therefore particular emphasis is placed on a relief from a mirror from Viminacium, the province of Upper Moesia, and the altar Ara Casali, now in the Vatican Museums. The paper traces the general development of the symbolic roles of Helios in different thematic representations and the context in which Helios as an all-seeing God is represented in Early Christian and Medieval art. The myth and the role of Helios in it could be understood in different contexts: as an inter alia neo-Pythagorean, celestial, and in moralizing. The role of Helios in the moralizing context is, however, indisputable. This aspect will be a key motivation in the transformation of the myth in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, not only in literary sources but in visual art as well.
