AB - The Jonah sarcophagus from Singidunum belongs to a group of Budakalász
travertine sarcophagi. These types of sarcophagi were produced in Budakalász quarry(
ies) and in Aquincum workshops and then exported via the Danube, before being
finished in local workshops. This paper uses the Jonah sarcophagus as a case study to
examine the integration of traditional tombstones into Early Christian cultural and social
contexts.

AB - This paper offers a new iconographic reading of a fragment of a Roman funerary stele. The fragment consists of a pediment with acroteria that was embedded as a piece of spolia in the south wall of the church of the Rukumija monastery. The fragment likely originates from the site of Viminacium, the capital of the province of Upper Moesia. The main part of the pediment was decorated with a relief depicting a Medusa’s head, while the reliefs on its acroteria have been identifi ed by scholars as horsemen. Following an iconographic analysis and comparison with stelai from Viminacium, as well as from Noricum and Pannonia, the figures on the acroteria are interpreted as Dioscuri. Based on this interpretation, the fragment presents an example of funerary iconography that is rare not only in Viminacium and Upper Moesia, but also in the surrounding provinces. The fragment from Rukumija contributes to a better understanding of the iconography of the divine twins as symbols of immortality and thee psychopompe, as well as companions of the deceased in the afterlife. Until now, their representation on the acroteria of Roman funerary stelae was unknown, making the fragment of the stele from Rukumija unique.

AB - A gold ring with a gem, made of multi-layered opal, with a representation of Pegasus and Bellerophon originates from Porodin near Aleksinac. Today, the ring is kept in the National Museum in Belgrade. The paper studies the presented motif, and importance of the archaeological site Gradište in the village of Porodin, from where this exceptional work of Roman jewelry.
The motif of Bellerophon capturing, that is, taming Pegasus, is a theme that was not common in Roman art, where this mythological hero most often was depicted in the scene of killing the Chimera. The expensive gold ring probably belonged to a high-ranking soldier, an officer, who stayed in Porodin, a fortified military-strategic point, and who could afford such a luxurious piece of jewelry. The choice of the depicted victorious motif on the gem, as an expression of virtus, could support this thesis about the military career of the owner of the ring.

The Jonah Sarcophagus from Singidunum: A Contribution to the Stydy of Early Christian Art in the Balkans

AB - The subject of the paper is the so-called Jonah sarcophagus from Singidunum (Belgrade). The sarcophagus belongs to the pagan, Pannonian type sarcophagi that were often decorated with Noric-Pannonian scrolls. What makes it unique in the region of Moesia is its relief decoration on the front side. In the field usually used for an inscription, one finds carved scenes from the Old Testament story of Jonah and the Good Shepherd. The sarcophagus is considered in the context of the growing Early Christian community in Singidunum and surrounding area. At that time, Singidunum was already a growing Episcopal seat and witnessing the formation of cults of early martyrs. The iconography is discussed in close proximity with analogous images of Early Christian art that may have impacted the development of its iconographic program.

All-Seeing Helios in the Adultery of Venus: the Image and Contex in Roman art and its Christian Afterlife

AB - This paper examines the role of Helios as an all-seeing deity in scenes of the adultery of Venus and Mars based on classical literary sources and mythological reliefs in Roman funerary art, and also elucidates its afterlife in Christianity. Few Roman examples survive that explicitly show this act of infidelity, therefore particular emphasis is placed on a relief from a mirror from Viminacium, the province of Upper Moesia, and the altar Ara Casali, now in the Vatican Museums. The paper traces the general development of the symbolic roles of Helios in different thematic representations and the context in which Helios as an all-seeing God is represented in Early Christian and Medieval art. The myth and the role of Helios in it could be understood in different contexts: as an inter alia neo-Pythagorean, celestial, and in moralizing. The role of Helios in the moralizing context is, however, indisputable. This aspect will be a key motivation in the transformation of the myth in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, not only in literary sources but in visual art as well.
