Large ore deposits in the central Balkans resulted in early discovery of metallurgy by the Neolithic inhabitants. High quantity of malachite at some Vinča culture sites was explained as associated with the beginning of metallurgy. Malachite was found mostly in form of amorphous lumps so it is more likely that it was primarily used in primitive metallurgy and incidentally in production of stone objects for adornment.en
