Smederevo was built as a fortified rulers’ residence and the new capital for the state of the despots after the sudden death of despot Stefan Lazarević in 1427 and the loss of Belgrade, which ä ruler, despot Đurađ Branković, it was built from 1428 unti svu á a castle was built with the ruler’s court, while a fortified urban settlement.
