TOPOI Exellence Cluster-Berlin, Humboltd Universitat-Berlin We graciously thank the following institutions and individuals who contributed to the research leading to this publication of the data from Foeni-Sălaş. Funding for the excavations at Foeni-Sălaş between 1992 and 1994 was provided through a grant to Haskel J. Greenfield from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (Ottawa), International Research and Exchanges Board (Washington, DC), the National Academy of Sciences (Washington, DC), and the Museum of the Banat, Timişoara, Romania. Permits for the excavation were obtained through the efforts of Florin Draşovean and the Museum of the Banat-Timişoara, whom we thank for permission to excavate and report on the site. The excavations were directed by Haskel Greenfield (with occasional visits by the Romanian co-director, Florin Draşovean); the lab director was Tina Jongsma-Greenfield; and photography was by Zev Greenfield. The Post-Neolithic ceramic culture historical analysis was carried out by Dimitrije Madas, while Alexander Kapuran conducted the post-Neolithic ceramic typological analysis.

AB - The paper summarises the results achieved during the first 18 months of the project THE FLOW (Interactions-Transmission-Transformation: Long-distance connections in Copper and Bronze Age of the Central Balkans). The project team has visited 12 museums in the territory of Central Serbia and accumulated a total of 5,000 km of road trips. More than 400 pottery samples from 67 archaeological sites were collected for provenance analyses, thermoluminescence and optically stimulated luminescence dating. Samples have also been collected from more than 150 bronze and 64 copper artifacts, as well as more than 25 samples from clay pits and ore deposits. A total of 30 samples from obsidian artifacts have been collected. Following the collection of samples, procurement procedures were conducted for AMS and TL/OSL dating, as well as calls for isotopic analyses of copper and tin provenance. Contracts for TL/OSL analyses have been signed with Instituto Universitario de Geología “Isidro Parga Pondal” from La Coruña (Spain), and for AMS analyses with Isotoptech Zrt. from Debrecen (Hungary), and Rutgers University in New Jersey (USA). Laboratory research within the project has so far brought many important results, among which are those on the origin of the raw materials for making the analysed ceramic vessels, as well as the pigments used for their decoration. Extremely significant data was obtained on the composition of the analysed items made of metal - weapons and jewellery, on the basis of which preliminary conclusions were made about the technology of their production, and them belonging to a certain region or workshop. The project initiated the creation of a network of scientific collaborations that can be continued through future joint projects and applications on international calls. The following project activities will be aimed towards the consolidation of already established methodological procedures as well as the interpretation of the awaited outcomes and their integration into explanatory models of complex processes in the societies in later prehistory.

AB - The paper presents an extraordinary new find from the site of Velika Humska Čuka near Niš, in Southeastern Serbia. During the 2022 excavation campaign, a set of bronze jewellery was discovered, comprised of a pin, a band, ten salteleons, and ten circular pendants. Of particular importance are finds of circular pendants, which are known throughout the Bronze Age in the territory of Europe. Such pendants are traditionally connected with Central Europe and the Hügelgräber culture, therefore representing an uncommon find for the Central Balkans. The paper provides a stylistic and typological analysis of jewellery, complemented with physical and chemical analyses, and further discusses the scope and effects of interactions between Central Europe and Central Balkans during the Bronze Age.

AB - It is a rare occasion that one researcher’s career in archaeology including published results, extensive fieldwork and professional contacts, can inspire a volume with such vast, diachronic and diverse topics as is the case here. Namely, the bibliography of Petar Popović (see Bibliography of Petar Popović in this volume) contains numerous papers, chapters, and books focused on numismatics; (e.g., Popović 1983; Поповић 1987; Borić-Brešković, Popović 2006), ancient Celts and Scordisci, their cultures, migrations and contacts (e.g., Jovanović, Popović 1991; Popović 1992a; 1992b; 1992c; 1993; 1994; 1996a), the Balkan Bronze and Iron Ages (e.g., Vukmanović, Popović 1982; Popović, Vukmanović 1992; Popović 1996b), Kale–Krševica (e.g., Popović 2006; 2012), etc. These publications reveal his main scholarly interests in social, cultural, and economic aspects of the interrelations between the Paleo-Balkan communities and the Greek and Roman worlds. Beginning in the 1960s, Popović participated in numerous local and multinational excavation projects targeting some of the most prominent archaeological sites in Serbia and former Yugoslavia (e.g., Padina, Gomolava, Vinča, Bosut, Kadića Brdo, Faros, Issa). As a result, along with abundant friendships, fruitful discussions, and international contacts, he also became an indispensable participant in most regional archaeological interpretative endeavours focusing on problems beyond the Iron Age and numismatics. Having all this in mind, the three editors along with all of the authors, who are Petar’s friends and colleagues, have happily decided to publish this volume as a birthday present to him. Our scholarly goal is to provide space for some new answers to the archaeological questions Petar Popović is interested in. Since his interests remain vast and focused on still very current topics, connecting the two is not a difficult task.

AB - This paper presents the results of archaeological excavations carried out in 2022 at the site of the hillfort of Popovica, near Sokobanja, in eastern Serbia. The site of Popovica has not been archaeologically excavated until now, even though it has already been known from surveys and accidental finds from museum records in Belgrade, Niš and Knjaževac. Test trench excavations were carried out as part of the project Archaeological research of sites from the Early Iron Age in the territory of the municipality of Sokobanja, organised by the Institute of Archaeology, Belgrade, and the Public Library “Stevan Sremac” in Sokobanja. Four trenches were opened, on the basis of which data on vertical stratigraphy, material culture and remains of prehistoric architecture were obtained. The research documented 3,597 mobile archaeological findings, namely, ceramic fragments, animal bones, flint, worked stone and daub. Most of the findings are ceramics fragments, 3,211 in total, out of which 475 specimens were selected as indicative of chronological and cultural characterisation. Almost no material from the historical phases of the past was recorded in the researched layers, therefore, on the basis of the research conducted so far, it can be concluded that Popovica was an exclusively prehistoric site. Three settlement phases were clearly established at the hillfort, identified on the basis of stratigraphic units and stylistic-typological traits of the ceramic material. Horizons from the Iron Age, Middle/Late Bronze Age and Late Eneolithic were singled out, which, according to the dominant cultural manifestations, can be linked to the Basarabi, Bubanj–Hum IV and Coţofeni–Kostolac cultures. Additionally, pottery pieces with elements of the Vučedol, Gamzigrad, Paraćin and Mediana II-III cultures were found sporadically, with the presence of surface findings of Late La Tène ceramics made on potter’s wheel, documenting, at the same time, the remains of the devastated layer from the most recent phase of settling of the hillfort. The mentioned research also revealed remnants of a drywall, which were probably the remains of prehistoric fortification architecture. The drywall most likely had two construction phases, considering the fact that two of its elements with different extension direction and different techniques of stacking stones were registered.

the Bronze and Iron Age settlements and necropolises in the Iron Gates region. His extensive knowledge and field experience, as well as long-lasting friendships with colleagues from the National Museum in Belgrade, have all contributed to the greater degree of research at the site of Konopište in Mala Vrbica near Kladovo. The renewed excavations at the site were initiated by A. Đorđević, curator of the National Museum in Belgrade, back in 2015. The excavations resulted in new finds of the so-called violin-bow fibulae (Violinbogenfibeln), or the Peschiera type of fibulae, which represent a prominent piece of the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age attire. New insight into the funeral ritual and the double-natured function of Peschiera fibulae are the focus of this paper

AB - Following more than seven decades of research on the Bronze Age cremation burial grounds in the territory of Serbia, the new absolute dates provide us with an opportunity to determine a more precise chronological sequence of different local cultural manifestations. Although the pioneers of the Serbian archaeology after WWII defined the main cultural trajectories that led to the establishment of cremation as the main burial rite during the 2nd millennium BC, several misconceptions were established that need to be corrected, considering new data. We regard this paper as our contribution to the better understanding of the cultural and chronological sequence in the Central Balkans during the Bronze Age.

AB - In this paper we present the first results of an interdisciplinary research project focused on Late Bronze Age metallurgy in the western and central Balkans. The comprehensive chemical and lead isotope analysis, and a strict consideration of archaeological criteria, has provided a deeper insight into supra regional metal exchange networks between the 14th and 9th century BC in this part of Europe. Particularly interesting and surprising are results regarding the provenance of raw materials for copper production, which have a chemical composition and lead isotope ratios that closely correspond to ore deposits in the southern Alps (North Italy). Based on the examination of 57 objects of different functions, chronology and distribution, it becomes apparent that copper from the southern Alps was almost an omnipresent raw material in the territories of the western and central Balkans with only a few finds from North Macedonia to indicate alternative sources. The analyses demonstrate that the reuse of fahlore-based copper is attested for the first time in the regions under study. The remarkable fact that other archaeological parameters do not indicate such an intensive connection between the Balkan area and Northern Italy raises a number of questions. The sustained and long-lasting networks of raw material procurement stand in contrast to the expected cultural interaction between metal producing and metal consuming prehistoric societies. The results of this work also highlight the currently underestimated role of the southern Alps as one of the main copper producing areas in Bronze Age Europe, and demonstrate for the first time that the region of western and central Balkans was one of the major recipients.

AB - The paper presents the basic research principles of the project THE FLOW (Interactions-Transmission-Transformation: Long-distance connections in Copper and Bronze Age of the Central Balkans), which is carried by the Institute of Archaeology in Belgrade, Institute of Nuclear Sciences “Vinča, and the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade. The theoretical and methodological perspectives of the project research engage an interdisciplinary approach based on analytical techniques incorporated within archaeology and natural sciences such as physics and chemistry. The project's goal is to apply an exact method to the problems of the origin of raw materials for the production of four specific groups of objects made of obsidian, pottery, copper, and bronze. Each of those materials represents a unique problem and requires a specific treatment, presented within this paper, together with the existing practice, analytic techniques, and methodological procedures for the collected samples. Further, the project incorporates the collection of absolute dates through AMS and OSL dating, with the application of the latest OxCal 4.4. calibration. The acquired dates, combined with the disposition of samples and raw materials will serve as a backbone for the creation of spatio-temporal models and the formation of an SQL database, all with a goal to create the interpretative basis for the study of local paleo-economies, long-distance connections, and social networks in the Central Balkans during the Copper and Bronze Age.

AB - esearch has shown that the territory present-day Serbia was continuously inhabited from the earliest prehistoric to historic times. Covering most of what is Serbia today, the Central Balkans acted as an important migration corridor that connected Southwest Asia with Central and Western Europe. Moreover, the Central Balkans represented an important ecological and social refugium for European human communities during harsh glacial periods and other crises. The highest population densities throughout the region’s prehistory were recorded in river valleys, as well as the lowland and low hilly areas at their peripheries, while occupations of hilly-mountainous areas were more frequent during Paleolithic and Metal Ages. Apart from historical and social circumstances, population densities and the occurrence of specific settlement patterns were also influenced by the distribution of mineral and food resources exploited during particular intervals. Prehistoric cultural and demographic links between the Balkans and Central Europe or Southwest Asia have been well documented. However, the Balkans also saw the rise of authentic cultural manifestations such as the Lepenski Vir culture which have not been documented in other parts of Europe.

AB - The Early Iron Age necropolises in the territory of Serbia are few and significantly
underresearched. Therefore, the discovery of the Vajuga — Pesak necropolis represented
an important step towards the understanding of the mutual relations
between the prehistoric communities of the Danube region and the Central Balkans
during the Iron Age 1. By analysing certain details regarding the burial ritual
and the material culture, especially fibulae as one of the most prominent elements
of the female costume, we’ll try to indicate the possible directions of cultural influences
in the aforementioned territory during the Iron Age 1. We will primarily
consider female individuals, as the bearers of those influences within populations,
the bearers that were always associated with certain ethnic markers.

AB - The Late Hallstatt period in the southern Carpathian Basin is marked by complex cultural relations for which the current knowledge is mostly based on the analyses of cemeteries. One of the most prolific forms of female jewellery in graves is bronze and silver temple rings that were used to decorate the head or hair. This is testified to by finds from the inhumation graves in Donja Dolina, where several pairs of temple rings, often of different forms, were located on both sides of the women's heads. Four basic types have been distinguished according to differences in the design of the terminals, and there are different variants according to the method of shaping the body. The oldest burial phases in Donja Dolina are characterized by smooth temple rings with a conical thickening at the terminals (Ciumbrud type), which have been found in the highest numbers in the inhumation graves in Transylvania. Temple rings of the Ciumbrud type from Donja Dolina should probably be seen as a reflection of established contacts and cultural transfer, but we should not completely rule out the possibility of the individual mobility of women. The reconstruction of how they were worn makes it possible to analyse the female bodily ornamentation, indicating that these are gender-specific items, which became an important part of the visual identity of women.

AB - The Balkan Peninsula played a crucial role for the introduction of metallurgy during the Copper Age and numerous archaeometallurgical examinations have delivered highly interesting insights on this topic. However, there is a lack of systematic analytical research on copper ore smelting and metal exchange for the later Bronze Age. In this paper we focus on the first archaeometallurgical results of slags from the sites Ruz?ana, Trnjane and C?oka Njica, Eastern Serbia, complimented by the discussion of XRF and lead isotope analyses carried out on 28 copper-based artefacts. Importantly, radiocarbon dating from these sites points to copper production already being undertaken at the end of the Early Bronze Age (19th?18th centuries BC), more than 500 years earlier than previously assumed. This enables us to investigate the flow of metal during the 1st half of the 2nd millennium BC. The analyses of the metallurgical slags indicate a copper matte smelting process in small open pit furnaces and the use of local sulfidic copper ore sources. The fact that these intensive smelting activities in Eastern Serbia can be paralleled with the early production hotspots in central Europe e.g. on the Hochko?nig (Mitterberg mining areas) sheds new light on the development of copper based metallurgy in Europe. At the same time, the evidence from Eastern Serbia shows that this area was a source of raw material for copper and bronze alloys providing a regional and supra-regional perspective. Furthermore, our analyses revealed the remarkable result, that by the start of the Middle Bronze Age (ca. 1700 BC) copper from the Northern Italian mining areas in the Trentino region also reached the western and central Balkans.

AB - Almost five decades following the pioneering research of Bronze Age sites in Northeastern Serbia (Timočka Krajina), several dozens of settlements and solely five necropolises with incinerated deceased burials have been recorded. Without the support of absolute dates, those finds have been attributed with diff erent cultural and chronological determination in the archaeological literature. Relying on stylistic and typological characteristics of ceramic production, forms and manners of decoration of finds in question are characteristic for Middle Bronze Age Vatin and Verbicioara cultures, as well as Paraćin culture which has been dated to the Late Bronze Age. B. Jovanović attributed the researched sites and necropolises to Paraćin culture, while on the other hand D. Srejović and M. Lazić defined a new cultural manifestation based on burial rituals, the Gamzigrad group. The systematic research in the vicinity of Bor, which sought to investigate the problem of Bronze Age copper metallurgy, has resulted in a vast amount of pottery finds characteristic for Vatin and Verbicioara cultures, while a considerable portion of pottery had the characteristics of Paraćin culture. The paper aims to identify some of the crucial cultural attributions of Middle Bronze Age communities in Northeastern Serbia based on new finds and absolute dates.

AB - The visualization of the archaeological heritage from the Balkans turns the spotlight on the human past in this region that is in many ways essential for our understanding of European history in general. Southeast Europe represents one of the key areas for analysing the human past, where most of the major cultural developments started that had a long-lasting impact on the continent. This specific culmination of cultural and social dynamics over millennia took place in the highly diverse, but connected landscapes of the Balkans. These distinct characteristics form the backbone of one of the most exciting and challenging areas for archaeology on the globe. Visualizing the Unknown Balkans offers an overview of ongoing interdisciplinary fieldwork in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in Serbia covering a time span of about six millennia. The results, in the form of maps, plans, geophysical screenings and digital reconstructions, open up new perspectives for potential future investigations and set the course for the broader public and scientific perception of archaeological research in the region.

Keramičku produkciju predstavljaju lonci, zdele, pehari, šolje i piraunosi. Drugu grupu (ujedno i drugu fazu topljenja) predstavljaju šljake manjih debljina i u obliku polulopte, a sadrže manju količinu balončića u strukturi i manje bakarnih zrnaca u sebi.
AB - In archaeological literature, the site of Trnjane, near Bor in Eastern Serbia is known as an urn necropolis, with 43 discovered urn graves. The excavations in Trnjane took place between 1985 and 1987-1989, and continued in 1998. The investigations also included an excavation of a nearby settlement, but the results of this research were never published. In most of the previous studies, Trnjane was assigned to the Middle and Late Bronze Age, while the necropolis was often connected with the spread of the Urnfield Phenomena from Central Europe toward the Balkans. New investigations started in 2017 as cooperation between the Archaeological Institute in Belgrade and the Institute for Oriental and European Archaeology (OREA) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences shed new light on the chronology and cultural assignment of Trnjane and other similar surrounding sites in the region of Eastern Serbia. The excavation of the settlement area in 2017 and 2018 yielded numerous finds indicating metallurgical activities connected with copper ore smelting (slag and ores), while pottery finds showed a typological resemblance with an Early and Middle Bronze Age repertoire. The radiocarbon dates from the settlement area and from urn graves of the neighbouring necropolis also point to a much earlier time than previously assumed. The new chronological determination of Trnjane raises a set of new questions, especially regarding the cultural connections between Central Europe and the Balkans and transfers of copper ore smelting technology in the Bronze Age.

AB - The process and different phases of the cultural influences between the communities with the characteristic “channelled pottery” from the southern Pannonian basin and the central Balkans has become much clearer in the last two decades due to new excavations and discoveries, especially in the region around the Velika and Južna Morava Rivers. From the prehistory until present times, the Morava Basin represents the main route from the north to the south of the Balkan Peninsula. The absence of the bronze hoards south of the Danube and Sava Rivers in Serbia, as one of the most typical features for the transitional period from the Bronze to the Iron Age in the Carpathian Basin, caused a lot of dilemma in the archaeological interpretations during the long history of research. Starting from the first discoveries at the site of Mediana near Niš and lasting until the latest excavations at the hillfort of Hisar in Leskovac, the question of channelled pottery has been the focus of archaeological research of the transition between the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age. Some of the recent absolute dates provide a better chronological determination at several multi-layered settlements in the Morava Basin, and on occasion they have led to significant changes in the generally accepted chronological system. The use of the purported Aegean migration in the earlier scholarship as a paradigm to explain cultural processes and shifts eventually generated a lot of criticism by the new generation of archaeologists, who claim that there is no evidence of it. In light of new discoveries, this paper seeks to provide a better understanding of the Belegiš II-Gava cultural complex, characterised by channelled pottery in the central Balkans, and to highlight the arguments for accepting or rejecting the migration hypothesis.
