AB - During the 6th century, the city of Viminacium was restored thanks to the return of the imperial authority in the province of Moesia Prima, after the great crisis of the 5th century. The settlement had been already mentioned as a πόλις by Procopius, Hierocles and Theophylact Simocatta, but none of these sources provide detailed descriptions nor its precise location. Theophylact also defined the city as a νῆσος, when recalling the military events that took place some years after after the Avar attack of 584. The current knowledge of the topography of the site allows the word νῆσος to raise even more questions about the possible location of the settlement during the 6th century. It has been proposed that the settlement was not reconstructed over the old Roman town, since the original settlement was not established on a river island or peninsula after all. By providing a careful analysis of the literary and archaeological data gathered on the site, and by comparing them to historical references to similar settlements, we will explore the possibility tthat the 6th century Viminacium developped in the vicinity of the Roman colonia.

AB - During Late Antiquity, Dacia Ripensis was the westernmost province of the Lower Danube region, and its territory today is covered by the modern countries of Serbia and Bulgaria (fig. 1). The study of Dacia Ripensis asks us, however, to also consider the situation on the opposite bank of the Danube. Despite the abandonment in the 270s of the provinces north of the river, the imperial authority indeed maintained bridgeheads and a strong military influence in the “true” Dacian territory – current Romania – at least in its southern part, until the late 6th century, both Moesiae and Dacia Ripensis being the rear bases for operations outside the Empire

Aquae in the De Aedificiis : Territorial and administrative issues in Dacia Ripensis during the 6th century

AB - This article explores the debate raised around the soundness of hypothetical structural
changes occurred in the administrative organization of the provinces along the Lower
Danube during the 6th century. The hypothesis of a gradual shift from a centralized provincial
administration towards a city-based governance has been advanced on the basis of the
information provided by the fourth book of Procopius' De Aedificiis. The manuscript shows
indeed an interesting incoherence in the categorization of the forts and fortified settlements
in the region, insofar as when describing the situation of Dacia Ripensis and Dacia
Mediterranea it abandons a province-based listing in favor of a city-based organization. This
has led different scholars to surmise a progressive increment in autonomy and power of major
settlements at the expense of the provincial central authority. This hypothesis, however,
presents several issues, which emerge evidently through the comparison of Procopius' work
with another relevant source of the time: the Novellae Iustiniani. The ambiguities around the
use of the lists in the De Aedificiis as evidence for administrative changes along the Lower
Danube will be analyzed within the historical frame provided by the development of the city
of Aquae, in Dacia Ripensis.

AB - Despite the presence of a large mountain range, the Balkans, the phenomenon of hilltop fortified sites can only be studied with difficulty in the Lower Danube. For one thing, there is currently no complete inventory of the fortifications found there ; for another, the rest of the territory belongs to the Danubian plain. This paper proposes to review the question by focusing on the
Late Roman province of Dacia Ripensis. It is part of a group of provinces that are less well known because they are the least studied. Only a few sites within its territory have been the subject of planned excavations and in-depth studies, including a very limited number of hilltop fortifications. It was decided not to devote this paper to the establishment and the presentation of a
complete inventory of hilltop constructions in Dacia Ripensis, even if such an approach might afford a certain interest, but rather to focus on the analysis of new settlements in the lower Danubian hinterland and the Christianisation of rural communities, in view of the strategic value of hilltop fortifications. Consideration will be given in particular to larger fortified sites such
as Romuliana, Berkovitsa, Golemanovo Kale, as well as less well-known sites in the regions of Knjazevac (Serbia) and Vratsa (Bulgaria). This analysis will be made in the light of the relationships between imperial power and rural communities, of the role of the Church in the phenomena studied as well as of changes in urban culture.

AB - Dacia Ripensis is among the less well known Late Roman provinces of the Danubian world. Several reasons can explain this situation, the state of the textual sources which mention this province (they are few and not eloquent) in the first place. Relying on some results of the DANUBIUS project of the HALMA-UMR 8164 research centre of the University of Lille, this paper proposes some thoughts and hypotheses about a specific aspect of the history of Dacia Ripensis, viz. its Christian topography. Four major historical problems are discussed: (1) the prominence acquired by the episcopal see of Aquae, (2) the possible identification of the see of Meridio, (3) the Christianisation of Romuliana and (4) the fortified outposts of Vajuga and Sucidava.

Evidence of Christianity in Viminacium: a study on historical sources, epigraphy, and funerary art

AB - The Roman city of Viminacium – founded in the 1st century AD along the
Danube, right in the middle of the Balkan area – went through a period of intense development
and prosperity during the second half of the 3rd century and for all the whole 4th century.
Economic wealth and political importance of Viminacium during this period are the
reasons that led to the establishment of a bishopric in the city, which is widely documented
by many sources gathered along the middle and lower reaches of the Danube. These sources
provide the name of some relevant bishops and may provide interesting information about
Viminacium’s position in the religious controversy against Arianism.
The first relevant information about Christian archaeology we can gain is the total absence
of any find indisputably related to the Bishopric Complex in the city, or to any other building
resembling urbane or rural churches. However, scholars have found some epigraphs, tombs,
paintings and sepulchral buildings that represent indisputable evidence of Christians in Viminacium.
