AB - During 2009, in the area to the east of the legionary fort and the city of Viminacium (Nad Klepečkom site), severely damaged late Roman monumental tomb (hypogeum) was discovered as a result of the Drmno coal strip-mine. Within the preserved section of the tomb, an exceptional gold finger-ring with a head shaped as an oil-lamp with two nozzles was found. Determining the date of the Viminacium finger-ring has posed several challenges due to factors such as the site’s location and the conditions of the find, the limited number of other small finds, and the lack of analogies. The Viminacium gold finger-ring reflects an explicit Hellenistic influence, and it represents an import from one of the centres of the eastern Mediterranean. Based on architectural elements of the analogous tombs from Viminacium, its chronology is assumed to be within the 4th century, while the earliest dating of the gold finger-ring could be slightly earlier, from the 3rd century AD.

Slavs and Earrings in the High Middle Ages: Socio-Economic Aspects of so-called Volhynian and Beaded Filigree Earrings in Eastern Europe

AB - In contrast to the Germanic peoples, for example, the practice of wearing earrings as
headdress jewellery was particularly popular among the Slavs during the Early and High
Middle Ages. Earrings represent one of the most numerous categories of metal finds in
the archaeological material in Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe. Many types
and variants of them have been described in archaeological literature since the
beginning of the 20th century. The paper will discuss the findings of Volhynian raceme
earrings and beaded filigree earrings which were widespread in the aforementioned
regions between the 10th and the 12th century. Volhynian earrings were created in the
workshops of Kievan Rus’, while the origin of the second type is probably in the territory
of West Slavs in Poland. Both types of earrings became popular, to a certain extent, in
Pannonia and the central Balkans. We can assume that luxury jewellery was also
produced in these territories, mostly inhabited by the Pannonian Slavs and South Slavs
(along with the Hungarians and others), however, there are more reliable material data
on the production of modest cast imitations. In this respect, we would like to address the
following topics: problems of identification of imported and locally produced items, the
nature of links between Kievan Rus’ and Poland with the regions to the south and also
the possibility of the existence of a peculiar identity of Slavic elites in a wider European
context on the basis of jewellery.

AB - Two ancient wooden vessels, specifically a monoxyle (1st century BCE to 1st century
CE) and shipwreck (15th to 17th century CE), were excavated in a well-preserved state east of the
confluence of the old Mlava and the Danube rivers (Serbia). The vessels were found in the ground that
used to be river sediment and were temporarily stored within the semi-underground exhibition space
of Mammoth Park. As part of the pre-conservation investigations, the primary aim of the research
presented was to characterize the culturable mycobiomes of two excavated wooden artifacts so
that appropriate conservation procedures for alleviating post-excavation fungal infestation could be
formulated. Utilizing culture-based methods, a total of 32 fungi from 15 genera were identified, mainly
Ascomycota and to a lesser extent Mucoromycota sensu stricto. Soft-rot Ascomycota of genus Penicillium,
followed by Aspergillus and Cephalotrichum species, were the most diverse of the isolated fungi. Out
of a total of 38 isolates, screened on 7 biodegradation plate assays, 32 (84.21%) demonstrated at least
one degradative property. Penicillium solitum had the highest deterioration potential, with a positive
reaction in 5 separate plate assays. The obtained results further broaden the limited knowledge on the
peculiarities of post-excavation soft-rot decay of archaeological wood and indicate the biochemical
mechanisms at the root of post-excavation fungal deterioration.

AB - The Socialist Heritage in Demagog Studio's Video Games
Our research aims to indicate how cultural heritage can be effectively implemented in commercial
video games outside the context of Serious games and in the narrower sense of games whose
purpose is primarily educational.
The paper will analyze the representations of socialist tangible heritage in the studio trilogy of
Demagog - Highwater, Golf Club-Nostalgia, and The Cub. Neglected brutalist architecture, socialist
urbanism, NOB monuments, cars, and other tangible remains from the time of the SFRY are a
paradigmatic element in the creation of the post-apocalyptic world in which the action of all three
games takes place. Instead of a neutral, "objective" approach to the presentation of cultural heritage and the discourse on its preservation, heritage in these games has the function of evoking the Yugoslav past and taking a critical stance towards its systematic persecution in contemporary
Serbian culture, but at the same time also presenting an unknown (or insufficiently known) culture/
heritage to a global audience.
Relying on design concepts and models of environmental storytelling and world-building, the
authors of this trilogy have created a consistent post-apocalyptic world largely based on current
tangible cultural heritage.
The Demagog Studio trilogy is an example of how video games, often condemned by the public as
trivial entertainment, can serve as an artistic medium, which conveys a message and comments on social trends, without renouncing its commercial character.

AB - The use of animal hard tissue during the metal ages is still an underexplored topic, especially in south-eastern Europe. Some of the cultural phenomena of the Eneolithic or Bronze Age period were never a topic of a separate study. One of these is the Kostolac cultural complex, which was widespread in the Eneolithic period in the southern Carpathian basin and the Balkans in multiple local variants, Kostolac-Coţofeni being characteristic for the eastern regions. This paper presents the artefacts recovered so far on Kostolac-Coţofeni layers from the sites of Bubanj-Novo Selo near Niš, Klokočevac-Kulmja Škjopuluj near Majdanpek in eastern Serbia and Hisar near Suva Reka on Kosovo. These assemblages are relatively small, but provide the first information regarding the osseous technology: raw material selection, manufacturing techniques, typological repertoire and possible mode of use.

AB - The study of burials and mortuary practices in the past provides
essential information on the role and treatment of children in
past communities. This study aims to better understand the
status of children by reviewing the material culture provided by
child burial contexts. Early Iron Age (800–300 BC) mortuary
practices in the southern Middle Danube (present–day eastern
Croatia and northwestern Serbia) are characterized mostly by the
cremation of the dead. The Iron Age is an important time for
funerary transitions. The standard practice of cremating the dead
was replaced by the practice of inhumation during the 6th
century BC. The manner of treatment of the dead body affected
the preservation of objects and data in the graves. This paper
studies 74 burials with child remains, costumes, jewellery, tool
items, and pottery grave goods. In Early Iron Age mortuary
practices, children were treated just like the adult members of
the community.

AB - Animal skeletal elements were an important source of raw materials throughout the prehistoric and historic times, and in the Roman period a vast variety of objects was produced from bones, antler, ivory and shells – everyday utilitarian objects, small tools, jewellery, decoration for composite items. The southern area of the Pannonia province provided interesting finds of bone objects, in particular those discovered on the territory of the town of Sremska Mitrovica – Roman Sirmium. Recently, the rescue excavations carried out in the Srem region due to the highway construction yielded some new finds. The site of Adžine Njive – Klenak, situated in vicinity of the town of Ruma was excavated in 2021-2022, and a very rich, multi-layered site, with remains from the Neolithic period, Bronze Age, Roman period, and medieval times was found.
Roman period horizon yielded rich and diverse portable finds, including several finely made bone objects. In particular, several pins with carefully executed heads may be singled out. In this paper will be presented artefacts discovered at this site, and their typological, morphological and technological traits will be discussed

AB - Ancient DNA research in the past decade has revealed that European population structure changed dramatically in the prehistoric period (14,000–3000 years before present, YBP), reflecting the widespread introduction of Neolithic farmer and Bronze Age Steppe ancestries. However, little is known about how population structure changed from the historical period onward (3000 YBP - present). To address this, we collected whole genomes from 204 individuals from Europe and the Mediterranean, many of which are the first historical period genomes from their region (e.g. Armenia and France). We found that most regions show remarkable inter-individual heterogeneity. At least 7% of historical individuals carry ancestry uncommon in the region where they were sampled, some indicating cross-Mediterranean contacts. Despite this high level of mobility, overall population structure across western Eurasia is relatively stable through the historical period up to the present, mirroring geography. We show that, under standard population genetics models with local panmixia, the observed level of dispersal would lead to a collapse of population structure. Persistent population structure thus suggests a lower effective migration rate than indicated by the observed dispersal. We hypothesize that this phenomenon can be explained by extensive transient dispersal arising from drastically improved transportation networks and the Roman Empire’s mobilization of people for trade, labor, and military. This work highlights the utility of ancient DNA in elucidating finer scale human population dynamics in recent history.

Taking the Deer by the Antlers: Deer in Material Culture in the Balkan Neolithic

AB - Prehistoric communities had strong ties with the animal world that surrounded them— animals were prey, sources of food, and raw materials, but also threats and mysteries, and certain animals often had an important place in the symbolic realm. With the process of domestication and the switch to animal husbandry as the main source of animal food, these relations changed considerably, and a certain dichotomy between “the domestic” and “the wild” may be noted in numerous past communities. When it comes to the Neolithic period in the Balkans, domestic animals had an important place in subsistence and economy, and it seems that cattle had a particularly prominent symbolic role. Wild species preserved some of their significance in both subsistence and symbolic realms, especially cervids (red deer, roe deer, and fallow deer). In this paper, the place of deer in the material culture of the Neolithic communities in the Balkans will be analysed: skeletal elements of deer were used for the production of diverse items, including non-utilitarian ones, or were part of ritual depositions, and deer representations are encountered in other materials, such as clay figurines. The symbolic meaning of deer cannot be reconstructed with certainty; however, it is probable that deer were tied with territoriality and the landscape.

Eneolithisation of the human figures: figural imagery in the Early Eneolithic Bubanj-Hum I culture

AB - One of the most important traits of the Late Neolithic Vinča culture, widespread in the territories of the central Balkans and the southern Carpathian basin, was rich figural imagery. Anthropomorphic, zoomorphic and hybrid figurines were particularly frequent, and there are also findings of prosopomorphic lids, zoomorphic vessels, and altars and other vessels with zoomorphic protomes. These types of objects were frequent on all Vinča culture sites; reaching up to several hundred of figurine fragments, and often display high quality of production. Early Eneolithic Bubanj-Hum I culture, widespread in the parts of previous Vinča culture areas, on the other hand, has very limited evidence for figural imagery. Clay figurines are scarce, and usually produced with limited labour investment. On the other hand, stone figurines, rare in the Vinča culture, now disappear completely, but figurines are now occasionally produced from bone – raw material that was never used in the Vinča culture. This change in quantity, quality and stylistic characteristics points to the significant changes in the symbolic value of the figural imagery, as well as overall changes in social and ritual lives of these prehistoric communities. However, Eneolithic figurines received very little attention in the archaeological literature thus far. In this paper will be provided an overview of evidence for figural imagery from the Early Eneolithic Bubanj-Hum I culture, part of the Bubanj-Sălcuţa-Krivodol cultural complex, from the sites on the territory of central Balkans. Figurines will be presented from stylistic and technological viewpoint, and also their place in the context of the Early Eneolithic will be discussed.

In 2016, archeological digs began that yielded remarkable discoveries, mainly thousands of fresco pieces, but also marble doorsteps. The church, which dates to the middle of the 14th century, was constructed in a style that is typical of the regions several hundred kilometers south. The closest similarities may be found at the Gračanica monastery (UNESCO list) and the Holy Archangels at Prizren. Fresco paintings were depicted in the best artistic style of the time. This sacred building was never completed, but based on its size and grandiosity the church is more like a royal endowment than a local lord churches. Sadly, historical sources provide no confirmation regarding this church. Because of this, an EDXRF analysis of the fresco paintings was carried out, taking into account the possibility that the use of exclusive pigments and a comparison with other churches from the era could provide light on the matter. The church was deserted soon after construction was stopped and used as a cemetery for the local population.

AB - Since the beginning of this field of study in the Central Balkans, Serbian archaeology and
archaeologists have focused on red tones and pigments. Scholars and professionals have been
attempting for over a century to prove the widespread usage of cinnabar in late Neolithic and
early Eneolithic cultures across the Central Balkan region, frequently evoking a mysterious
and mystical use of this liquid and magical metal (quicksilver).
Over the last decade, a large number of samples with different red hues or pigments were
examined utilizing portable milli-beam EDXRF spectroscopy to identify and determine the
provenance of the aforementioned colors. The examination was focused on 86 pieces in total,
42 of which were different ceramic shards without a single occurrence of cinnabar appearance
confirmation. Conversely, out of ten altars, a single piece had a cinnabar fingerprint
discovered, and four out of the thirty-four figures had cinnabar coloring. All fragments
originating from the eight archaeological sites, spanning all regions of the Central Balkan, but
only at two sites cinnabar were confirmed.
Basic statistical analysis revealed that cinnabar, rather than ferrous pigment, which is typical
for the bulk of the material and hues, was used as a red pigment in 10% of the altars and
nearly 12% of the anthropomorphic sculptures. Although the number of examined pieces is
rather limited, based on this pilot analysis, we can assume that populations from the
5 th millennium BC were aware of the risks associated with using mercury cinnabar and
had awareness about it. In addition, the coloring of cinnabar on presumed cultic religious items like altars and figurines may have represented a "higher idea" in the minds of
the people living at the time. It is clear that dangerous mercury was not applied to objects
used daily, particularly those used for food. An increasing number of samples and a
greater variety of sites from which the samples originate will be included in new and
ongoing analysis. We expect to obtain more comprehensive and serious data in the
future, which will either completely disprove our assumptions or confirm and target our
future attention on this issue.

AB - Archaeological site Prosjanice, in the Mihaljevačka šuma near the village of Čortanovci in Srem (Northern Serbia), is located on the right Danube bank, under the last slopes of Fruška gora mountain. At this position, remains of the Roman military border fortress, settlement, and necropolis were discovered. The fortress was built at the end of the 3rd/beginning of the 4th century AD and it was destroyed at the beginning of the Great Migrations period, in the second half of the 4th century in particular. Archaeological excavations of the southern part of the fortress, part of the cemetery, and one structure in the vicinity were carried out on several occasions during the second half of the 20th century. During 2018, two rescue campaigns were focused, among other contexts, on the remains of settlement and necropolis coeval with the fortress. The focus of research on the Roman Limes in Serbia primarily revolves around the fortifications, with considerably less published information concerning the surrounding areas and settlements associated with these fortifications. In Čortanovci during the 4th century, both the settlement and its cemetery were situated near the fortification. The settlement was inhabited by soldiers and their families, supported by the discovery of graves of women and children in the necropolis, along with other portable finds within the settlement. The significance of this paper is reflected in the fact that it represents preliminary results of the first archaeozoological analyses of the Roman settlement at Čortanovci, Mihaljevačka šuma – Prosjanice site, which provide an insight into animal exploitation strategies of the Roman soldiers and their families during the Late Antiquity.

AB - The aim of this research is to determine whether palaeoparasitological analysis of mineralized concretions found
within a stone vessel from the Roman city of Viminacium can shed light on its past use. The ruins of Viminacium,
the capital of the Roman province of Moesia Superior, are situated 90 km southeast of the Belgrade in Serbia, and
about 12 km from the town of Kostolac in the vicinity of villages Stari Kostolac and Drmno. It was established as a
military camp in the first century CE with a legion permanently stationed there. The stone vessel was discovered
during systematic archaeological excavations of the public bath complex with a public toilet near the amphitheater
in Viminacium. The finding is dated by relative chronology in the second half of the third century. The
vessel is topologically defined as a mortarium according to shape and size. Mineralized deposits were preserved
inside the vessel rim, sides, and base. Microscopic analysis of the mineralized deposit revealed eggs of intestinal
nematode roundworms (most likely Ascaris sp., but possibly Pterygodermatites sp.) from the sides and base of the
vessel. This is the first time that parasite eggs have been identified from concretions inside a Roman stone vessel,
and have strong parallels with a previous finding of parasite eggs in mineralized deposits from a ceramic
chamber pot from late antique Sicily. The finding suggests the possible use, or secondary use, and function of the
stone vessel as a sanitary item (such as storing wiping implements) for personal hygiene in the public bath of
Viminacium. Further paleoparasitological research requires a systematic analysis of calcified deposits from
Roman period stone vessels for more clear insights into their function, use and reuse.

AB - Even though archaeozoology of the Roman and the Late Antique periods is a young discipline that has gained momentum in Serbia in recent decades, there is still modest information originating from the area of Western Serbia. So far, the data from the archaeological site Jerinin grad – Brangović has been published (Kukić, Mladenović 2014). However, in the last two years, analyses of archaeofaunal material from the area of present-day Čačak, which includes three sites/locations – Courtyard of the Gymnasium, Courtyard of the National Museum, and Courtyard of the Church of the Ascension of the Holy Virgin – dating back to the Roman and Late Antique periods, have gotten underway. This paper aims to provide an insight into animal management within the same landscape at three different locations through time by comparing taxa ratios, body part profiles, age and sex data, pathological changes, as well as butchery mark patterns between various sites/locations to reveal plausible diachronic and contextual differences in the strategies of animal exploitation.

AB - Sustainable preservation of historic buildings is a long-term process that begins with the analysis of all data related to their creation and further duration and ends with the proposal of measures to preserve their current condition and prevent future damage. In accordance with this, the most important goal of the project Mortar Design for Conservation - Danube Roman Frontier 2000 Years after - MoDeCo2000, was set. Data obtained from the archaeological,
architectural, and geological context research with the thorough laboratory testing of sampled Roman mortars along the river Danube in Serbia was used to create valuable proposals for the design of compatible mortar mixtures that could be used for the conservation of the structures in the investigated area.

AB - The meaning of decoration has undoubtedly represented one of the
central issues of archaeology since its formative years. It is equally important
in pottery studies. The archaeological approach to the classification
of decoration, exemplified in the seminal work of Anna Shepard (1956:
255–305), included formal, technical, decorative, and symbolic indicators,
thus emphasizing lines of analysis of decoration and a broad platform of
interpretation. Over time, the interpretation of designs has been considered
from different perspectives, among which the following stand out as
constantly current: (relative) chronology, technology, cultural context, and
symbolism. All of the above, and more, covered by the term (decorative)
style, is are part of a complex information exchange process that ultimately
leads to the identification of social groups and the determination of their

AB - The research project Mortar Design for Conservation - Danube Roman Frontier 2000 Years After (MoDeCo2000) explores Roman mortars of the former Danube Limes in Serbia. It aims to fill in some missing pieces of the puzzle about life in the Roman period in the border territory by examining the creation of fortifications, and public and residential buildings. Finally, the project designs tailor-made conservation mortar mixtures in accordance with these precious data. The project concept is based on the prevailing idea of modern architectural conservation, which requires a holistic approach, combining old building practice and new scientific knowledge about building constructions, technologies, and materials used in the Roman period in the mentioned territory, with the aim of giving science-based recommendations for future practical conservation.
