AB - This paper deals with the Roman amphitheatres on the Danube limes. Some buildings are archaeologically attested, while others are assumed according to the appearance of the terrain, epigraphic data and particular archaeological finds. Besides a few inscriptions, the location and construction of the amphitheatres will be discussed, which is important for understanding who built and used these buildings.

AB - Viminacium is located in Serbia, at the confluence of the Mlava and Danube rivers. It was an important Roman military base and for most of its history it was home to the Legio VII Claudia. According to the recent archaeological excavations of the fortress, it was found that it lacks the Late Roman construction phase. Based on the destroyed walls and ramparts, the filled defensive ditch, the tombs and the buildings from the late Roman period, it can be assumed that the fortress was abandoned in the 4th century AD.

AB - Archaeological research in the area of the City of Požarevac in Serbia has been going on for decades, but it has yielded the greatest results precisely in the territory of Roman Viminacium, while the protection and presentation of the cultural and historical heritage of the area have been largely carried out within this site. The elements that make up the close area of Viminacium, represented by the modern archaeological park, ruling mining industry, small rural settlements, fragmented agricultural fields, and the mighty Danube river, are mutually connected with many forms of intangible heritage. The aim of this chapter is to present this space which unifies the geological landscape and archaeological heritage, through the centuries-old exploitation of natural resources. It is exactly what gives this ever-transforming landscape its unique character and what can be used in future in the presentation of Viminacium Archaeological Park.

AB - Viminacium was one of the most important Roman legionary fortresses along the Danube and the capital of the Roman province Moesia Superior. Today it is the archaeological site in Serbia with necropolises considered to be among the largest discovered until today from the Roman period. From 2006, all discovered remains on the site have been presented within Viminacium Archaeological Park. The material and immaterial heritage of the site were presented in accordance with the modern methods in the field of cultural heritage protection, among which the interpretation was one of the most important. Special attention was paid to the popularization of the site which resulted in the growth of the cultural and, specifically, archaeological tourism in Serbia. With promotion of Viminacium in Europe and the world, Roman heritage in Serbia gained the opportunity to be recognized as a part of the global cultural heritage. Finally, the importance of the touristic potentials and the true value of the site have been recognized by the local community whose members are employed in the Park. Every year the touristic capacity of the Park grows, and it is enriched with new structures dedicated to various activities. Following the modern age and digital revolution, the visit to Viminacium Archaeological Park is also possible by virtual tour.

AB - This study will analyse the CBM (Ceramic Building Material) industry of ancient Viminacium, the capital of the Roman province of Moesia Superior and the military camp of the Legio VII Claudia. Extensive archaeological excavations have unearthed 14 brick kilns in the areas surrounding the civilian settlement and the military camp. The majority of kilns were spread out across two main production areas. They were operated by the legion and were identified as the main areas of CBM production in Viminacium. Several kilns were found outside of these areas and probably represent small scale private production.

AB - The Klisurica hoard was discovered in 1986 in the village of the same name, situated on the Grebac mountain pass, on the southern slope of Mali Jastrebac, near Prokuplje. It consists of 1655 denarii and antoniniani, spanning the period from Vespasian to Trajan Decius. Numerous archaeological sites from the Roman period have been registered on the southern side of the Jastrebac massif and in the Toplica region, while the remains of a villa rustica to the south of the Klisurica village are the most important regarding our find. One of the most important central Balkan routes, the Lissus – Naissus – Ratiaria, which connected the Adriatic and the Black seas, used to pass this way. Considering the position of the site and conditions in the surrounding area, the owners of the villa and its inhabitants were undoubtedly farmers and cattle breeders, and were most probably the owners of the coin hoard.

AB - Animal sacrifice in the Roman world was considered to be a form of communication with the divine sphere. Such rituals were performed to thank Gods, heroes and other divine beings, and ask them for favours, protection,
and good health. The most commonly sacrificed animals were cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs, with the occasional addition of other species such as dogs. Since dogs were often connected to the underworld, their sacrifice was usually related to chthonic gods. Considered impure, dogs are thought to have been sacrificed as means of purification and rites of passage, as foundation offerings for the protection of buildings, as well as within agricultural rituals. On the other hand, they could also have been sacrificed in order to serve as faithful companions and guardians in the afterlife – traits taken from their everyday roles in human life.

Iron age pottery from Ukosa, Kruševac district

AB - Upon the meeting point of the rivers West Morava and South Morava lies
the medieval tower of Stalać. About one kilometer to the south of this legendary
tower, another site was discovered – Ukosa. The excavations of this site started in
2009, conducted by the experts from the National Museum in Kruševac. They con firmed that this site was inhabited for almost two millennia – the earliest being the
Iron Age, indicated by pottery discovered in one of the pits in 2012.
While processing pottery from Ukosa, the authors have hoped to find material ev idence of the Celtic movements towards Greece during the early 3rd century BC.
During their work, it turned out that the pottery belongs to the 1st century BC and
if only sporadically, it does possess parallels in this part of Serbia. All of the anal ogies quoted in the paper indicated that the Scordisci were present in many riv er valleys and they obviously found them suitable to move along, although they
always chose to settle down on peaks or plateaus of the strategic importance. A
well-chosen strategic position was an advantage with always growing danger of Ro man raids from Greece, exactly during the 1st century BC.

well-chosen strategic position was an advantage with always growing danger of Ro man raids from Greece, exactly during the 1st century BC.,

AB - This paper will present the results of a preliminary study of a group of four fluvial
vessels recently discovered in the vicinity of Roman Viminacium in modern-day
Serbia, dated between the Late Iron Age and Late Medieval Period. The remains
of four vessels were discovered in March 2020 during regular mining activity at
the Drmno open-air coal mine near the town of Kostolac in Serbia, at four kilometers distance from the contemporary course of the Danube. Archaeologists
from the Belgrade Institute of Archaeology working as resident researchers at the
nearby Viminacium Archaeological Park were immediately alerted and surveyed
the scene, subsequently joined by members of the Centre Camille Jullian research laboratory for further studies and analyses of the remains.

AB - During more recent archaeological research in the area of the legionary fort of the Legio VII Claudia in Viminacium, a part of the defensive ditch along the north-western part of the camp was also explored. Several archaeological units were discovered in this area, among others, a smaller necropolis with skeletal burials as well. This necropolis consists of 36 graves, mostly with brick and tegulae constructions, and also several freely buried individuals. On the basis of the stratigraphy and the few find of coins, this necropolis was dated to the second half of the 4th century. It is interesting to note that the most numerous graves at the necropolis are those of new-borns and children, with only a few adult individuals registered.

AB - In the past couple of decades, during the archaeological research of the ancient Roman city and the military camp of Viminacium more than 13.500 graves were unearthed. A wide variety of funerary rites and different types of grave constructions was noted. Many discovered graves were made using CBM and it is usually taken for granted that the bricks and tiles used were recycled. In this paper we analyse this phenomenon and try to determine whether this was truly the case. Our secondary goal is to determine the number of usages of the material and to establish the period after which it was reused. Answering these questions is important for the interpretation and further studies of the material and the way it was used.

AB - Over the past year and due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the entire world has witnessed inequalities across borders and societies.
They also include access to archaeological resources, both physical and digital. Both archaeological data creators and users spent
a lot of time working from their homes, away from artefact collections and research data. However, this was the perfect moment to
understand the importance of making data freely and openly available, both nationally and internationally.
This is why the authors of this paper chose to make a selection of data bases from various institutions responsible for preservation
and protection of cultural heritage, in order to understand their policies regarding accessibility and usage of the data they keep.
This will be done by simple visits to various web-sites or data bases. They intend to check on the volume and content, but also
importance of the offered archaeological heritage. In addition, the authors will estimate whether the heritage has adequately been
classified and described and also check whether data is available in foreign languages.
It needs to be seen whether it is possible to access digital objects (documents and the accompanying metadata), whether access
is opened for all users or it requires a certain hierarchy access, what is the policy of usage, reusage and distribution etc. It remains to
be seen whether there are public API or whether it is possible to collect data through API. In case that there is a public API, one needs
to check whether datasets are interoperable or messy, requiring data cleaning.
After having visited a certain number of web-sites, the authors expect to collect enough data to make a satisfactory conclusion
about accessibility and usage of Serbian archaeological data web bases.

AB - Monetary finds, especially coin hoards, are unavoidable sources for studying the political, economic and social history of a certain period and territory. Coin hoards are particularly valuable in the interpretation of complex historical processes in the Roman Empire, especially in the 3rd century, from which written sources fail to provide the anticipated clues. Given these circumstances, the analysis of finds requires caution in their interpretation primarily because the conditions of discovery are often insufficiently reliable, and the mandatory comparison with similar finds from the immediate and broader vicinity.
A large number of coin hoards from the territory of present-day Serbia originate from the 3rd century, wherein they gradually grew in numbers from the time of Alexander Severus and peaked in the period between 252 and 254 AD (Graph 1).

AB - The scattered hoard of coins from an unknown site in the territory of Serbia consists of 17 antoniniani spanning the period from Philip I to Volusianus. The preserved number of specimens and the composition of the hoard do not enable us to determine the date when it was deposited. The unknown discovery location presents an additional difficulty, because there is no possibility to connect it with other well documented hoards from this territory. For these reasons, the scattered hoard, marked as Unknown Site 2, cannot be viewed as a reliable historical source, except for the fact that it testified about the existence of one more monetary find and contributed to information about the coins in circulation in the middle of the 3rd century.

abstract = "The scattered hoard of coins from an unknown site in the territory of Serbia consists of 17 antoniniani spanning the period from Philip I to Volusianus. The preserved number of specimens and the composition of the hoard do not enable us to determine the date when it was deposited. The unknown discovery location presents an additional difficulty, because there is no possibility to connect it with other well documented hoards from this territory. For these reasons, the scattered hoard, marked as Unknown Site 2, cannot be viewed as a reliable historical source, except for the fact that it testified about the existence of one more monetary find and contributed to information about the coins in circulation in the middle of the 3rd century.",
