AB - The paper deals with a technological-typological analysis of the finding of a bone spatula – ruler, discovered in a closed unit from the first half of the 2nd century CE in the suburbium of Naissus – Niš (the site of Trg Oslobođenja). It was made of a flat segment of a larger rib of a large mammal, most probably cattle (Bos taurus). The processing technology used and the choice of raw material (Bos bone) represent common traits of bone items production in the Roman period. The registered use-wear traces indicate that the item was most probably used as a spatula to flatten the wax on writing tablets (tabulae ceratae).

AB - Agriculture is a complex and dynamic socio-ecological system shaped by environmental, economic, and social factors. The crop resource pool is its key component and one that best reflects environmental limitations and socio-economic concerns of the farmers. This pertains in particular to small-scale subsistence production, as was practised by Neolithic farmers. We investigated if and how the environment and cultural complexes shaped the spectrum and diversity of crops cultivated by Neolithic farmers in the central-western Balkans and on the Hungarian Plain. We did so by exploring patterns in crop diversity between biogeographical regions and cultural complexes using multivariate statistical analyses. We also examined the spectrum of wild-gathered plant resources in the same way. We found that the number of species in Neolithic plant assemblages is correlated with sampling intensity (the number and volume of samples), but that this applies to all archaeological cultures. Late Neolithic communities of the central and western Balkans exploited a large pool of plant resources, whose spectrum was somewhat different between archaeological cultures. By comparison, the earliest Neolithic tradition in the region, the Starcevo-Koros-Cris phenomenon, seems to have used a comparatively narrower range of crops and wild plants, as did the Linearbandkeramik culture on the Hungarian Plain.

Svitak kao atribut pokojnika: nadgrobne stele sa portretima iz Singidunuma

AB - Scroll (rotulus, volumen) had not been often represented as an attribute of the deceased on the funerary steles at the limes of the Upper Moesia province. Therefore, it is significant that it was represented on three steles with portraits from Singidunum. On the monumenterected to his wife Larsinia Ingenua by P. Aelius Dionysius ,veteran and signifer of the IV Flavia legion, is depicted married couple in the dextrarum iunctio pose and the husband was represented holding the scroll (IMS I, 35). In the relief on the stele with double epigraphic panel are depicted two female figures, Domitia Ursa and Serenia Quarta, whose names are mentioned in the inscription (IMS I, 52). One of them most probably holds the scroll and the other some object resembling it. Also, in the relief with portraits of married couple carved on today fragmentary preserved stele, the male figure holds the scroll in his hand (IMS I, 62). Besides declaring belonging to the educated and cultural social class and emphasizing the social status, the scroll on these steles had more complex context. It is possible that on the stele of Larsinia Ingenua scroll in the hand of (her husband) veteran of Greek origin P. Aelius Dionysius should have emphasized the idea stated by the dextrarum iunctio gesture, i.e. final farewell of the couple, but it also declared the relatively significant position of this veteran. Scroll in the hand of one woman on stele with double epigraphic panel was intended to emphasize the social status of the portrayed woman and her belonging to the sphere of culture. Third stele was unfortunately preserved only in fragments and does not make possible more precise conclusions. Scroll, as we can see, had very complex role in the integrated system of iconography and inscriptions on the funerary monuments. Although it is often difficult to define precisely its symbolic meaning as an attribute a scroll is exceptionally important element in understanding the image, which the deceased wanted to emphasize by the portrait on his funerary monument.

AB - A gold ring with a gem, made of multi-layered opal, with a representation of Pegasus and Bellerophon originates from Porodin near Aleksinac. Today, the ring is kept in the National Museum in Belgrade. The paper studies the presented motif, and importance of the archaeological site Gradište in the village of Porodin, from where this exceptional work of Roman jewelry.
The motif of Bellerophon capturing, that is, taming Pegasus, is a theme that was not common in Roman art, where this mythological hero most often was depicted in the scene of killing the Chimera. The expensive gold ring probably belonged to a high-ranking soldier, an officer, who stayed in Porodin, a fortified military-strategic point, and who could afford such a luxurious piece of jewelry. The choice of the depicted victorious motif on the gem, as an expression of virtus, could support this thesis about the military career of the owner of the ring.

Stele con sella curule e littori sacrali (CIL III 9733): ordo decurionum a Viminacium

AB - The stele of C. Cornelius Rufus, with the epitaph and the reliefs, offers significant data on the lives of the members of the ordo decurionum and of the priests of the municipality of Viminacium. The relief on the plinth of the stele with the sella curulis, two camillus, and two lictors underlines a sacred idea. The objects in the hands of the lictors, the double stick (doppelstäben), and the commoetaculum were the insignia of the flamines. In this way, it is made an allusion to C. Cornelius Pacatus, decurion and flamen of the municipium of Viminacium, who was mentioned on the epitaph. This type of iconography is rarely seen, and its closest analogies are on the monuments of the Noricum. The other relief in the central field could indicate the possible previous military career of the deceased. The theme of the relief, attributed to Helena and Menelaus or some other mythological couple, alludes to the spouses, C. Cornelius Rufus and his wife. The representation of a male figure in the lorica musculata, with pteryges, decorated with a gorgoneion on the chest, could indicate that the monument belonged to a high-ranking officer. It could be assumed that C. Cornelius Rufus began his career as a soldier, which allowed him to make easier progress in public life, i.e. in the civil service. It could be assumed that he was a veteran of Legion VII Claudia.
The epigraphic and archaeological finds allow us to note that among the members of the ordo decurionum and among the priests in the municipium of Viminacium, the family of the Cornelii with a decurion and augur, and a decurion and flamen, was one of the most important and powerful. The Cornelii belonged to the high social class and could afford this exsceptional marble monument.

Plant storage in Neolithic southeast Europe: synthesis of the archaeological and archaeobotanical evidence from Serbia

AB - This paper presents and evaluates the archaeobotanical and archaeological evidence of plant product storage from Early and Late Neolithic sites in Serbia, southeast Europe. The commonly stated and widely accepted archaeological evidence of storage in the region includes ceramic pots, clay bins and pits. However, as shown in our study, the archaeobotanical evidence does not always support the interpretation of these structures and objects as plant storage containers, as it is often of secondary origin and composed of discarded plant material such as by-products of plant use. On the other hand, the available botanical record points to some other possible ways of storing plant products, such as in perishable containers that do not normally survive archaeologically in this part of the world. Although limited, the combined evidence indicates variability in plant storage practices and solutions within the cultural phenomena associated with the Neolithic Starevo and Vina cultures of the region. For instance, plant storage in large clay pots was noted at some of the sites, and in clay bins at others. Also, different structures and features may have been used for storing crop products, whilst wild plants seem to have been kept in perishable and/or small ceramic containers. A further impression is that finds of the same plant (type) in different containers may reflect different stages in processing.

AB - The subject of the research is the cult of Silvanus in the Danube limes area in the Roman province of Upper Moesia. It has been analyzed eight votive inscriptions of which are preserved only four, and one votive relief related to the cult of this deity. The aim of the research is to elucidate the relationship between Silvanus and agricultural-pastoral world, its indigenous or Italic character and identity of the worshipers. In this work is also emphasized the significance of the impact from the neighboring provinces, especially the Lower Pannonia, in shaping of this cult in Upper Moesia.

Silvan i njegova kultna zajednica : reljef uzidan u Smederevsku tvrđavu

AB - This paper examines the votive relief with three deities that was built into the wall of the Smederevo Fortress. Relief is located in a hardly accessible place, which complicates its detailed review. Nevertheless, the study shows that Nikola Vulic has the right and that the relief represents Silvan and Jupiter. The attribution of the third figure, probably Mars, is difficult because of the absence of known analogies. Study has shown that the Smederevo relief was dedicated to Jupiter as the supreme god and to Silvan Domesticus in order to protect home and property. Silvan on this relief was represented in his italic form, most likely under the influences that came with the army from neighboring Pannonia. If the third figure on this relief is understood to be Mars, then Silvan could be interpreted as the defender of home, family, and property on the outskirts of some settlements but also as a tutor of finium in these border areas of the Empire.

AB - The focus of the paper is on the travel scene depicted on the funerary stele of L. Blassius Nigellio (CIL III 1650), a speculator of legio VII Claudia, from Viminacium. Seeking to gain a more comprehensive understanding of this scene from the everyday professional life of a Roman speculator, it draws attention to an iconographic pattern shared by a group of monuments of Roman principales (speculatores, frumentarii, beneficiarii consularis), among which the scene from Viminacium holds a very important place. The speculator on the stele from Viminacium travelling in a carriage (rheda), possibly his own, apparently was on a military-related assignment the purpose of which was either to requisition supplies for the army or to exact the payment of the taxes intended for its upkeep. The paper also takes a look at the origin and social status of the Upper Moesian speculator who could afford such a costly tombstone.

The Jonah Sarcophagus from Singidunum: A Contribution to the Stydy of Early Christian Art in the Balkans

AB - The subject of the paper is the so-called Jonah sarcophagus from Singidunum (Belgrade). The sarcophagus belongs to the pagan, Pannonian type sarcophagi that were often decorated with Noric-Pannonian scrolls. What makes it unique in the region of Moesia is its relief decoration on the front side. In the field usually used for an inscription, one finds carved scenes from the Old Testament story of Jonah and the Good Shepherd. The sarcophagus is considered in the context of the growing Early Christian community in Singidunum and surrounding area. At that time, Singidunum was already a growing Episcopal seat and witnessing the formation of cults of early martyrs. The iconography is discussed in close proximity with analogous images of Early Christian art that may have impacted the development of its iconographic program.

Il culto di Liber a Taurunum: un contributo allo studio della viticoltura nella Pannonia Inferiore

AB - The goal of this study is to shed light on the cult of Liber in Taurunum, today Zemun, in the Roman province of Lower Pannonia. The study attempts to understand and explain, as far as possible, the spread and characteristics of the veneration of Liber in Taurunum on the basis of the nine votive altars with reliefs and inscriptions, preserved in a fragmentary state. The dedications to Liber and the Dionysian reliefs of Taurunum most likely came from a sanctuary that would be one of the few in this part of the Danube limes. Taurunum, a well-known naval base, was located in the plain alluvial area of Pannonia, and with its fertile land, it was very suitable for agriculture and viticulture. It could be hypothesized that also in Taurunum, as in the places close to the Pannonian limes (Popovac, Almus Mons, Cibalae), as well as in the limes of Moesia Superiore (Singidunum, Smederevo, Aureus Mons), viticulture was part of the daily life of the inhabitants. Unfortunately, systematic archaeological excavations have never been carried out in Zemun, and this does not allow us to reach more in-depth conclusions.

AB - The bronze signum discussed in this paper was discovered by archaeological
excavation on the site of Timacum Maius in 2010. Found in the area of a
luxurious Roman-period building, the artefact shows a tapering body with a
central conical socket similar to a spearhead socket. It is one of the
twenty-three known signa of the so-called classical-type. Most of them were
found in the context of the cult of Jupiter Dolichenus, and we also presume
the cultic purpose of the bronze signum from Timacum Maius. A similar find
comes from Jupiter Dolichenus’ shrine in Egeta on the Danube limes with an
inscription that connects it directly with the Dolichenian cult, and with the
First Cohort of Cretans (Cohors I Cretum), the unit which had previously been
stationed at Timacus Maius. The signum from Timacum Maius is most likely also
connected with the cult of Jupiter Dolichenus and chronologically belongs to
a period which is much earlier than the Severan age.

AB - The paper attempts to understand two aspects of everyday life in Roman Singidunum, agriculture and the worship of agricultural deities, based on epigraphic and archaeological evidence. The inhabitants of the castrum and the civil settlement of Singidunum continuously cultivated the land and worshiped the deities. Numerous rural estates on the edge of the city territory and the wider periphery were pointed out. Confirmations of agricultural activities mostly date from the 3rd and 4th centuries, while confirmations of cult activity are mostly dated to the slightly earlier period of the 2nd and 3rd centuries. Bacchus, Liber, and Libera are honored as well as Silvano, Terra Mater, and Priapus. In addition to the explicit attestations of the cult, inscriptions, and sculptures, there are everyday objects such as gems or lamps also. Archaeological and epigraphic findings did not show a significant correlation between the confirmation of land cultivation and the veneration of the patron deities of this activity.

All-Seeing Helios in the Adultery of Venus: the Image and Contex in Roman art and its Christian Afterlife

AB - This paper examines the role of Helios as an all-seeing deity in scenes of the adultery of Venus and Mars based on classical literary sources and mythological reliefs in Roman funerary art, and also elucidates its afterlife in Christianity. Few Roman examples survive that explicitly show this act of infidelity, therefore particular emphasis is placed on a relief from a mirror from Viminacium, the province of Upper Moesia, and the altar Ara Casali, now in the Vatican Museums. The paper traces the general development of the symbolic roles of Helios in different thematic representations and the context in which Helios as an all-seeing God is represented in Early Christian and Medieval art. The myth and the role of Helios in it could be understood in different contexts: as an inter alia neo-Pythagorean, celestial, and in moralizing. The role of Helios in the moralizing context is, however, indisputable. This aspect will be a key motivation in the transformation of the myth in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, not only in literary sources but in visual art as well.

Sette divinità planetarie: esempio di corazza da parata da Castra Tricornia (Mesia Superiore)

AB - The study attempts to shed light on the decoration of the breastplate from Castra Tricornia (modern Ritopek), the mutatio in the limes of the Roman province of Upper Moesia, and to revise previous radinig. The study attempts to comprehend and explain the context of this representation of seven deities on a military toreutic masterpiece. The new analogies from a distant part of the Roman Empire allowed for a more reliable attribution of the iconography. It is a Gallo-Roman vexillium with an almost identical representation of seven deities, which is now kept by the Laténium Museum in Switzerland. In addition to the cosmic, represented iconography can have a religious connotation without detracting from the military-historical value of the breastplate armor itself. The paper presents the most famous representations of the seven deities from the Septizonium of Septimius Severus and others. The central relief on the breastplate from Ritopek is viewed in the context of reading two acts from the Iliad, where the stone is used to attack the enemy, Aeneas and Diomedes or Ajanto and Hector, in each case a scene of a heroic act that gives a heroic character to the representation of the deities on the breastplate.

AB - Vine-growing and winemaking in the area of the Roman province of Up¬per Moesia are looked at based on the information supplied by the ancient sources, and the archaeological and epigraphic evidence (inscriptions, artistic depictions, vine-dressing and winemaking implements, drinking and transport vessels). Viniculture is associated with the Greco-Roman cultural orbit, while the native central-Balkan tribes typically consumed alcoholic beverages made from cereals. Therefore the goal of the research is to shed as much light as currently possible on the significance of vine-growing and wine in the life of the inhabitants of Upper Moesia.

AB - The topic of this study is two honorary marble monuments of Ravna (Timacum Minus). Both of them are preserved with the inscriptions (IMS III/2, 23 and 36). They are decorated with dolphins and the trident, often present in the Neptune iconography. This paper offers a new iconographic and epigraphic reading of these monuments. The monuments are discussed in the context of other testimonies of the cult of Neptune in Upper Moesia, most often linked to the Danubian territory of the province, as well as in relation to other monuments of the same type in this region.

AB - The integral programme communicated by the so-called Jason sarcophagus from Viminacium includes the depiction of Jasons' and Perseus' heroic deeds on its front, and the satyr and menead in ecstasy on the sides. The significance of this funerary programme is examined on two levels: that of the symbolism of individual scenes, and that of their interrelationship and the whole they constitute as different expressions of triumph over dead. The sarcophagus is viewed with the respect to a related repertory of themes in the arts as well as to the time and place of its creation.
