Ovo je podrazumevalo utvrđivanje asortimana keramičkih građevinskih proizvoda VII Klaudijeve legije, njihovih morfoloških i morfometrijskih karakteristika, tehnoloških aspekata i sleda operacija njihove izrade (od izbora i karakteristika sirovina, preko tehnika njihove obrade, oblikovanja i obeležavanja, uključujući i alatke, do pečenja), lociranje mesta proizvodnje i određivanje prostorne organizacije ciglana i karakteristika i namene proizvodnih objekata i struktura.

AB - Today, the valorization of cultural heritage is seen as a complex process, which is primarily based on an interdisciplinary approach, greatly surpassing the known concepts of protection, presentation or interpretation. Certainly, the foundations of adequate valorization of cultural heritage should primarily be shaped by knowledge about it, and formal education must necessarily be seen as one of the basic carriers of information and the initial phase of continuous work on developing awareness of the importance of heritage. Therefore, the first valuation of heritage is inextricably linked to the knowledge gained in schools, at the first place - primary, and more importantly in the secondary. From all the above, it follows that it is necessary to make cultural, and especially archaeological heritage, as accessible as possible for the educational system through an appropriate methodological approach and modern tools, as well as examples of good practice, whether on an international, national or local level. On the other hand, in order to achieve this kind of synergy, the interpretation of cultural heritage in all three mentioned segments plays a very important role. It enables the development of teaching methodologies through non-formal learning and the application of practical knowledge formed through the use of various educational tools, while through examples of good practice it develops a sense of acceptance (adoption) and evaluation of heritage in local environments. This type of dialogue between formal education and interpretation of cultural heritage is one of the topics researched by the TRAME project - Tracce di memoria from the Erasmus + program, and on this occasion the main results of the project will be presented.

AB - The technology of brickmaking was introduced to the area of Viminacium by the Romans. The development and growth of the urban settlement in the 1st–4th century necessitated the need for huge quantities of construction materials. Large-scale production of ceramic building materials, which are often abbreviated to CBM, is attested both by the numerous finds of the material itself, as well as traces of the manufacturing process. More than 15 kilns and several structures used in the process were discovered in the vicinity of Viminacium. Still, the subject of Viminacium CBM production has only been modestly studied. Thus, the aim of this paper is to analyse this production, namely the characteristics and organisation of its processes, based on the results of archaeological excavations and previously published research. To achieve this goal, we focused on the layout of the particular manufacturing sites, and the production process organisation, together with the necessary review of the characteristics of the found kilns and other structures used in the production process.

AB - This study will analyse the CBM (Ceramic Building Material) industry of ancient Viminacium, the capital of the Roman province of Moesia Superior and the military camp of the Legio VII Claudia. Extensive archaeological excavations have unearthed 14 brick kilns in the areas surrounding the civilian settlement and the military camp. The majority of kilns were spread out across two main production areas. They were operated by the legion and were identified as the main areas of CBM production in Viminacium. Several kilns were found outside of these areas and probably represent small scale private production.

AB - Ceramic building materials1 were one of the key building materials of the Roman Empire. They were introduced to the area of the province of Moesia Superior and ancient Viminacium by the Romans. Prior to their arrival, the province was sparsely urbanised, and in the following centuries, Viminacium grew to be its largest agglomeration2. The site is located in Eastern Serbia, next to the modern town of Kostolac, on the right bank of the Mlava river, near its confluence with the Danube. It was first established as a legionary camp (castrum legionis), whose oldest phase dates to the Flavian period. In the late 1st - early 2nd century, a civilian settlement developed to the west of the camp. The city gained the status of municipium in AD 117, during the reign of Emperor Hadrian, and in AD 239, during the reign of Emperor Gordianus III it was granted the status of colonia. The city and its surroundings were destroyed by the Huns in AD 441 and never again regained its former glory.

AB - This paper will present the results of a preliminary study of a group of four fluvial
vessels recently discovered in the vicinity of Roman Viminacium in modern-day
Serbia, dated between the Late Iron Age and Late Medieval Period. The remains
of four vessels were discovered in March 2020 during regular mining activity at
the Drmno open-air coal mine near the town of Kostolac in Serbia, at four kilometers distance from the contemporary course of the Danube. Archaeologists
from the Belgrade Institute of Archaeology working as resident researchers at the
nearby Viminacium Archaeological Park were immediately alerted and surveyed
the scene, subsequently joined by members of the Centre Camille Jullian research laboratory for further studies and analyses of the remains.

Four different vessels were identified among the wooden remains well preserved under six meters of clay-like sediment: two dugouts, a single plank belonging to a flat-bottomed vessel, and a well preserved flat-bottomed planked barge. The discovery, taking place just two days before the introduction of the state of emergency in Serbia due to the 2020 sanitary crisis, was followed by hasty rescue excavation, documentation, and extraction of the shipwrecks and their transportation to the nearby Archaeological Park for further conservation. While focusing on the architectural characteristics and nautical capabilities of the discovered vessels, this paper will also present preliminary conclusions on the context of their discovery in relation to the archaeological topography of the region, as well as with the naval construction and navigation practices within the Middle Danube zone of transport geography.

AB - In the past couple of decades, during the archaeological research of the ancient Roman city and the military camp of Viminacium more than 13.500 graves were unearthed. A wide variety of funerary rites and different types of grave constructions was noted. Many discovered graves were made using CBM and it is usually taken for granted that the bricks and tiles used were recycled. In this paper we analyse this phenomenon and try to determine whether this was truly the case. Our secondary goal is to determine the number of usages of the material and to establish the period after which it was reused. Answering these questions is important for the interpretation and further studies of the material and the way it was used.

AB - Photogrammetry is the science and technology of obtaining information about physical objects and the environment using 2D photographs. Recent technological advancements allowed the method to become accessible and quite valuable in the studies of cultural heritage. The method was introduced into the field procedures of archaeological research of Viminacium in 2012. The goal of this paper is to demonstrate the usage of photogrammetry during investigations of the amphitheatre and to exemplify its applicability and benefits for future archaeological excavations. Based on our experience, the method proved to be easy to use and incorporate into existing procedures, especially as it was significantly faster and economical compared to the traditional documenting techniques. Obtained 3D models can fulfill various needs, from the creation of regular archaeological documentation to the visualization and presentation of the results of research.

AB - A great number of lamps with the image of Bacchus mask, thyrsus and syrinx on the disc, which are related to the cult of Bacchus, were discovered during the archaeological research of Viminacium. Most of these lamps represent grave goods, which is certainly the result of a fact that focus of excavation work was mainly on the area of necropolis. Presence of these lamps in the graves can be related to the fact that, besides many other aspects, Bacchus was also honoured as a protector of the dead. During recent excavations four new lamps were found in profane contexts, which lead the authors to examine symbolic meaning of this representation.

AB - Viminacium is located in Serbia, close to the conuence of the rivers Mlava and Danube.Previous investigations of Viminacium included only small parts of the legionary fortress related to the Legio VII Claudia, while recent archaeological excavations comprised also theNorth-western part of its defensive system. During the excavation campaigns in 2002, 2003and 2016–2018, remains of the Northern (porta praetoria) and Western Gate (porta principalissinistra), ramparts, corner and interval towers, as well as a part of a V-shaped ditch, have beenexcavated. Unearthed parts indicate the details of the ground plan of the defensive system andthe whole fortress. Based on recent excavations it was possible to suggest at least two construction phases. A primal defensive system dates back to the Flavian period. It consisted oframparts made of earth and wooden planks, while the curtain of the ramparts and towers weremade of the locally queried naturally baked clay and mortar. The stone fortress was built duringthe 2nd century AD and its defensive walls were backed with the older ramparts. The defensivesystem was disrupted during the 4th century AD and along the ramparts graves from the late4th century were set. Excavated parts of the architecture and related archaeological layers improved our knowledge and understanding of the history, planning and building process of Viminacium legionary fortress, as well as the history of military units that had been stationed there.

AB - During a few decades long period of excavations at Viminacium, a great number of brick kilns has been found, which testify of a highly developed industry of brick production at this site. The kilns have been mostly discovered at the territory of the southern city’s necropolis, at thePećine site, where a production center, consisting of three kilns with a shared porch, has beenexcavated. A lesser number of brick kilns has been found west and east of the city. During therescue excavations in 2017, relatively near to the site of this production center, a new brickkiln was uncovered. This newly found kiln represents one of the biggest and best preservedbrick kilns at Viminacium so far. The ring chamber, vaulted ring port and grill kiln have beenpreserved almost entirely and also the greatest part of the furnace chamber. In the layers with in the kiln, as well as in the construction itself, lots of bricks with the stamp of the VII Claudialegion and a few examples with this inscription in cursive writing have been found. Next to thekiln, a big pit has been excavated, which represents the mine for the extraction of clay used inthe brick-making. According to the small fnds, the kiln is dated to the 2nd century.

AB - This study will analyse the brick industry of ancient Viminacium, the capital of theRoman province of Moesia Superior and military camp of the VII Claudian legion.Extensive archaeological excavations have unearthed 19 kilns used for brickmaking, located south and east of the civil settlement and the military camp. The majority of thekilns were found in the area of the southern necropolis, and seemingly belong to one, large manufacturing centre, which was used for making various ceramic products.Further, recent excavations have identified another manufacturing centre, located to theeast of the city. Both centres were active during the 2nd and the 3rd centuries AD, andshould be attributed to the VII Claudian legion. Additionally, finds of a few stampedbricks suggest that several private workshops existed in the territory of Viminacium.
