AB - During the last decades, within Roman provincial
archaeology, great attention has been paid to supplying
the army. The concept of supply in Moesia Superior was
not studied thoroughly enough. In this sense, this paper
could represent an introduction to further study of
the supply and transport of goods and other products.
During the past few decades in Serbia, the question of
supplying Roman troops in Moesia was most studied by
Petar Petrović (Petrović 1980; Petrović 1983; Petrović
1991) and Viminacium research team (Ilić et al. 2011).

AB - Being on the frontier and on the Danube, major river communication, Viminacium become from the first century destination for both local and imported goods. Financial potential of the legionaries with high salaries was extraordinary magnet for traders. Cosmopolitan character of the city as well as the process of Romanization are also visible through consumption and demand of specific or characteristic products. Ultimately Viminacium become the largest city, production center and the capital of the province Moesia Superior.
Amphoras as the most distinctive production segment for decades are found throughout the site in different contexts with a wide chronological span from the 1st until the end of 6th century AD. We will present distribution and origins as well the analysis of quantities estimated to be delivered and later found in the urban, suburban, funeral, and military contexts.
Following amphoras led us to mapping both spatial and chronological relations. Special attention is devoted to tastes and food preferences of the population. We will examine personal connections and origins with modern trends of the period to establish changes in traditions, Romanization or military campaigns influences. Secondary use of the amphoras was also discussed. Changes in trade trends are also visible and interpreted and influences on this changes analazyed.

nasipa zapadnog segmenta severnog bedema starijeg logora (sl. 1).
i u ukopima ispod objekta.

AB - Viminacijum, legijsko utvrđenje i glavni administrativni
nekropola i dalje traju. Nakon objavljenih prvih 1.000
grobova sa lokaliteta Više grobalja, usled napredovanja
površinskog kopa uglja, istraživanja su obuhvatila
istočni deo viminacijumske nekropole, čiji deo čini i
lokalitet Kod koraba.
depresija dimenzija oko 400 x 150 m, duboka do 10
И СТАНОИЛ, na osnovu oblika slova datovan u period
od 13. do 15. veka. U prvoj polovini 20. veka nad bunarom

AB - In this paper, we will try to determine the function of the specific vessels that have a handle above the opening. Such
containers are found in several sites on limes, e.g. Teutoburgium and Viminacium, and in urban and rural sites. During the
research of Viminacium, pots with handles that cross the upper side of the rim are found at several locations. In addition to
the settlement layers, they are most numerous in the amphitheatre. We distinguish three types of such pots. All are made
of medium refined clay in grey or red color. Their outer surface is polished, in the case of grey specimens, and in the case
of red ones, it is coated with tones of red slip. Two vessels are found in a well of a rural site (Liskovac near Cibalae). The
context of the finds in Viminacium date to 2/3 of the 3rd century, while the context from Liskovac is dated to the end of 1st CE
to the beginning of the 2nd CE. The origin of the form can be found in the prehistoric and Hellenistic world, but its function is
jet to be established.. The most interesting thing about them is that a great number of them were found in wells, which could
mean to us that they could be used to extract water. Using the experiment, data from the excavations, literary sources and
ethnographic data, we are going to try to propose the function of those vessels

Optimo piscatu, Fish and fish-related finds from Roman Southern Pannonia and Upper Moesia as the evidence of global trade and local customs

AB - Literary, documentary, and archaeological sources for fish preservation and fishing during the Roman period are quite big but the story
about fish, fishing and imports of fish products in Pannonia and Moesia is untold. Fishing and fish processing are culturally defined, its
context is complex and aspects of the economic significance are multilayered. A significant number of Roman fishing implements from
Siscia, a representative amount of fish remains from Viminacium and evidence gathered from amphorae and pottery from both provinces
present the basis for understanding its economic role. The social context of consumption of fish and fish products can be seen in the light
of the global trade (e.g. Hispanic garum documented by amphorae) and the local customs (freshwater fish remains within the
archaeological context). Analysis of fish and fish-related finds are excellent tool for understanding the long distance trade and local
supply, as well as data on the nutrition of different classes within society of Roman provinces.

AB - On the sites of Pannonia and Moesia, objects are found that are apparently entirely
unusual, and some of them have not changed their appearance from prehistoric
times to the present day. For example, a vessel with a grate, an object whose exact
purpose has not been revealed so far, and the theories about it exceed the number
of those found. Vessels with a handle above the opening are used from prehistory to
the Middle Ages and are also found in ethnological ceramics. The large clay lid also
traces its origins from prehistoric times to the present. And cheese moulds have not
changed their appearance since Roman times. Bowls with buttons on the handles
also attract attention with possible guesses about how they were used. In this paper,
we will present the current state of research on several of such items that are found
in Lower Pannonia and Upper Moesia

AB - Overview of the part of pottery vessels discovered at Viminacium is given in the article. Techniques of making and decorating as well as their multipurpose use are presented. The most common working technique in the treatment of outer surface of vessels are colouring, engraving and stamping. Most of the vessels are dated to the period from the beginning of the second to the end of the third century. Certain forms had a short expiration date, while some underwent several production making changes. These are locally produced vessels intended for everyday use. Among them, according to their decoration, vessels made after the luxury imported models stand out. The research of Viminacium confirmed the role of its pottery-brick production center, which, with its production and distribution, met the needs of both the city itself and the surrounding provinces.

AB - Recently conducted archaeological excavations at the territory of the VII Claudia legion military
camp at Viminacium (Moesia Superior) brought out to light significant knowledge on roman
pottery from the oldest phases of the castrum and the city development. During these excavations
numerous forms of the imported and local ceramic vessels were discovered, already known in
Viminacium pottery production repertoire. New finds of so-called "carrot" amphorae improved
precise chronological determination of this type of ceramic forms within the capital of Moesia
Superior. It is supposed that this amphora type originates from the eastern Mediterranean
workshop centers and that were in use for supply of military troops as well as civilians as
containers of dry, exotic fruits of the eastern imperial territories.

prehistoric layers. With the development of the city, import increased and with it
came real delicacies in the form of exotic animals, as well as in the form of various
beverages. The remains of such vessels were found in large numbers throughout
Viminacium’s settlement layers.
Ceramic vessels along animal remains and traces on human remains, show us the tur bulent centuries of its existence until the collapse under the onslaught of the Huns.

AB - Among the multitude of ceramic fragments, there occasionally appear handles of unusual shapes, or the remains of large dome-shaped lids. Such vessels were used for food preparation in kitchens with open hearths. Ever since prehistory, they have represented a kitchen appliance in daily use to the present day, and they appear in Roman kitchens as well. Various sources refer to this method of food preparation as sub testu. These vessels’ segments have also been archaeologically confirmed on Roman sites in Pannonia Inferior and Moesia Superior. There is a type of dish called patina in Roman cuisine, similar to modern-day souffle, which was presumably prepared on plates with a flat bottom and curved, convex, or concave walls.

AB - Defining relationship between the Danube as a major river route and adjacent limes
road with all its crossroads and shortcuts proved to be a challenging task. Both mili tary and civilians were focused on both routes exploiting them to the maximum.
From the earliest decades after forming Moesia as a province, legions were tasked
to build roads through some of the harshest terrains. Importance of these actions
can be traced through time with tablets, both imperial and legionary celebrating
these enormous undertaking absolutely necessary for the frontier to function. Plac ing and coordination of military distribution centers was crucial for supply of gar risons in smaller forts that had no facilities for long term storage of food. In theory
major routes are simple and follow the course of river. In the field situation is far more
complicated.
Viminacium as a case study had its own network of roads directed towards all di rections with multiple roads intersecting and merging. Following the distribution
of villas, cemeteries and production centers for almost 20 years to this date – a vivid
network came to life. The city and legionary fortress were in the center of this spi der’s road net with Mlava and Danube to encircle and open it worldwide towards
both east and west.
Limes was the best economically developed region in Moesia Superior with most
of its production potential focused on Danube for distribution. Local production of
pottery and coinage from Viminacium mint found its way to remote provinces along
this line.

Pottery from Viminacium - a craft product of multipurpose function [apstrakt]

AB - The paper will present an overview of the shape, function and structure of cera mic vessels discovered during the decades-long archaeological excavations of
Viminacium. These vessels are the product of a local pottery craft complex. The
chemical and mineralogical characterization of the pottery production of this wor kshop suggests the presence of several groups of ceramic clays. Several basic clay
masses are distinguished in relation to whether the final product was intended
for preparing food, its consuming, or ritual laying in the grave of an inhumated or
cremated deceased. Mineralogical and chemical examinations were conducted
over the raw materials and it was determined that besides this pottery craft cen ter, there had to be another one in which was used the clay from the same loan.
This conclusion follows the extensive analysis of the product range from this
pottery complex, which is compared with the forms discovered on the necropo lis itself and in the settlement stratums. Forms that do not appear in the pottery
range of this center, but are discovered at necropolises or in settlement stratums
with the same chemical index in clay mass, must have been the product of another
workshop at Viminacium whose production went parallel with the first one.
The specificity of the material of this workshop complex is reflected in the fact that
craftsmen who have responded to the needs of pottery use in funerary rituals at the
necropolises have made these products in poor quality compared to those distribu ted to the living part of the population

objekti 3 i 4 u južnom delu amfiteatra (Nikolić et al. 2014: 50).

AB - During the decades-long research of the Viminacium necropolises, numerous ceramic
vessels were discovered in graves of cremated and inhumated individuals. Their
research helps to a better understanding of not only funeral rituals, but also the everyday
life, customs and economy of the ancient population. The wide repertoire of
discovered vessels indicates developed trade links with other parts of the Empire. The
majority of these vessels represent local products, which indicates the inventiveness
of domestic potters who supplied all of the Viminacium necropolises with their products.
The paper presents an overview of the most common forms and types of vessels
discovered in Viminacium graves and whose timeframe covers the period from the
1st to the 4th century AD.

nije prestao do danas.
Taj razvoj / proces možemo pratiti u arheološkom materijalu i stoljećima kasnije, a dvojnost
je zapanjujuća: s jedne strane, rimska kultura, u njenom promijenjenom obliku – snažno
prilagođena novim povijesnim okolnostima i procesima – živi zahvaljujući ljudima i zajed nicama koje podržavaju Romanski identitet kao vlastiti; S druge strane, izravni nasljednik
rimske, mediteranske / bizantske kulture i identiteta snažno utječe (izravno i neizravno) i

Evidence of cheesemaking in lower Pannonia and upper Moesia

AB - Evidence of cheese making at sites in lower Pannonia and Upper Moesia are shown in the
typical ceramic molds for cheese. We have no written evidence about cheese production in
Pannonia and Moesia, and the cheese itself or the woven strainers are archaeologically invisi ble. We can thus learn about cheese-making exclusively from ceramic fragments. The finds of
vessels that we consider to be strainers/molds for cheese allow us to reckon with a production
that must have satisfied at least the local demands for this product. It is known that the Emper or Hadrian lived the life of a regular soldier for a while (SHA, Hadrian X, 2) and enjoyed “larido,
caseo et posca”. This source gives us an evidence that cheese was part of soldier’s diet, and
most the soldiers were probably able to produce the cheese by themselves. The production of
good-quality cheese is considered an art even today, and the case was the sa¬me with the Ro mans and the process itself has not undergone substantial changes. Experiments that follow
guidelines from Collumela and other authors show similarities with the cheese making known
from ethnology and from the way cheese is made in farms of today.
