AB - During Late Antiquity, Dacia Ripensis was the westernmost province of the Lower Danube region, and its territory today is covered by the modern countries of Serbia and Bulgaria (fig. 1). The study of Dacia Ripensis asks us, however, to also consider the situation on the opposite bank of the Danube. Despite the abandonment in the 270s of the provinces north of the river, the imperial authority indeed maintained bridgeheads and a strong military influence in the “true” Dacian territory – current Romania – at least in its southern part, until the late 6th century, both Moesiae and Dacia Ripensis being the rear bases for operations outside the Empire

AB - Despite the presence of a large mountain range, the Balkans, the phenomenon of hilltop fortified sites can only be studied with difficulty in the Lower Danube. For one thing, there is currently no complete inventory of the fortifications found there ; for another, the rest of the territory belongs to the Danubian plain. This paper proposes to review the question by focusing on the
Late Roman province of Dacia Ripensis. It is part of a group of provinces that are less well known because they are the least studied. Only a few sites within its territory have been the subject of planned excavations and in-depth studies, including a very limited number of hilltop fortifications. It was decided not to devote this paper to the establishment and the presentation of a
complete inventory of hilltop constructions in Dacia Ripensis, even if such an approach might afford a certain interest, but rather to focus on the analysis of new settlements in the lower Danubian hinterland and the Christianisation of rural communities, in view of the strategic value of hilltop fortifications. Consideration will be given in particular to larger fortified sites such
as Romuliana, Berkovitsa, Golemanovo Kale, as well as less well-known sites in the regions of Knjazevac (Serbia) and Vratsa (Bulgaria). This analysis will be made in the light of the relationships between imperial power and rural communities, of the role of the Church in the phenomena studied as well as of changes in urban culture.

AB - Dacia Ripensis is among the less well known Late Roman provinces of the Danubian world. Several reasons can explain this situation, the state of the textual sources which mention this province (they are few and not eloquent) in the first place. Relying on some results of the DANUBIUS project of the HALMA-UMR 8164 research centre of the University of Lille, this paper proposes some thoughts and hypotheses about a specific aspect of the history of Dacia Ripensis, viz. its Christian topography. Four major historical problems are discussed: (1) the prominence acquired by the episcopal see of Aquae, (2) the possible identification of the see of Meridio, (3) the Christianisation of Romuliana and (4) the fortified outposts of Vajuga and Sucidava.
