AB - During the excavations of
Viminacium in 2016, a red deer tibia, with what seemed like a trauma caused by a weapon, was found in the vicinity of the amphitheatre. Consequently, the aim of this research was to determine whether that was the case and to attempt to reconstruct the potential hunting moment. The analysis of the wound suggested that the animal was hit from its right side with a deltoid or leaf-type long-range weapon, such as throwing spears or arrows. The irregular shape of the trauma on the lateral side of the bone was due to the socket that went through it along with the tip of the weapon. Since this wound is located just beneath the knee of the deer, it would not have been enough to kill the animal instantly, but there are no indications of any bone healing, which leads to an assumption of multiple hits, and thus multiple huntsmen involved in the hunt, which was a common practice. There is also a possibility that this particular animal took part in a
venatio, that is, the beast hunt in the arena, since it was found in a trench related to the amphitheatre, alongside a large number of other wild animals, which undoubtedly participated in the spectacles.

AB - The presence of the Roman legion in Viminacium implied the existence of a cavalry unit in its structure. There is no evidence that equids needed by the army were supplied from large centers; rather, it is assumed that they were predominantly bought locally. One of the horse-breeding places could have been located north of the site of Rit – a residential-economic suburb of Viminacium, where these animals could have grazed the grounds all year long. This is suggested by the unusually high ratio of equid remains from this site, the suitability of the terrain, as well as written sources.

AB - Freshwater shell remains in late prehistoric faunal assemblages of Southeastern Europe have often been neglected and usually just counted, while their species level was rarely determined. Based on ethnographic data, they were usually interpreted as remnants of additional food resources, but also as food for pigs and as fish baits. Several pits filled with unionid shells have been dug up in 2012, in the course of protective archaeological excavations of late prehistoric settlements located at the shore of the River Klepečka, near its confluence with the Danube (in the surroundings of the later Roman city of Viminacium). According to other archaeological finds, the pits were dated to the Early Bronze Age. The assemblage of more than 1000 valves offered an opportunity for a detailed morphometric study of mollusk remains. The research included taxonomic identification, specific measurements of each valve and recording of taphonomic data, such as shell color, fragmentation and artificial modifications. Three species have been identified: Unio crassus, Unio pictorum, and Unio tumidus. We discuss whether the species significantly differ according to their length, breadth and height, as well as morphological traits of the hinge area. According to contextual and overall distribution we will discuss possible cultural preference towards these three species in prehistory. Finally, based on contextual data and taphonomic features, we will discuss their purpose and significance within the studied settlement. The results will be placed in regional and temporal context in order to suggest freshwater shell significance in the life of people who occupied Southeastern Europe in late prehistory.
