AB - The site of Drenovac in central Serbia has been extensively researched through several projects from the 1970s to
present. In recent years, application of geophysical survey significantly changed a course in the investigation of the
use of space and spatial patterning. It provided means for targeted excavations and research of specific features
– houses, non-domestic buildings, ditches, etc. Comparing different lines of evidence obtained through recent systematic
excavations and geophysical surveying, we will present the complex history of the settlement and its internal
organization.
Drenovac is a large and long-lived settlement inhabited in the Early (6100-5900 BC) and the Late Neolithic (5300-
4700/4500 BC), with thick cultural deposits and complex stratigraphy. Detecting changes in size and internal organization
of the settlement during this long occupation proved to be a difficult task. While data on the earlier phases of
occupation are still limited, extensive research of the latest building horizon (Vinča-Pločnik phase) provided valuable
data for research of the settlement’s spatial organization and architecture. Thus the focus of this presentation will
be on this phase. On the macro level, we will discuss the settlement’s size, layout and internal organization. We will
evaluate both natural and cultural factors that could affect the specific patterning of different features. On the micro
level, we will turn to the individual houses and their immediate surroundings, and make some observations about
space division and use.

AB - In this paper, we review several steps of the process leading to the creation
of the on-site museum at the Neolithic site of Drenovac: archaeological research
(geophysical survey, excavations, processing of findings and samples), conservation
and presentation of archaeological heritage. The concept of the site’s presentation
revolves around in situ remains of the Late Neolithic houses. The process of their
conservation was a pioneering project in Serbia and included cooperating and consulting
with various experts. The presentation of the site is still an ongoing project
with the focus of the final stages on the exhibition space in the area surrounding
the preserved houses. The exhibition will be designed to tell a story about the site,
excavations and findings. In addition to the presentation of life in the Neolithic settlement, the goal is to show the work of archaeologists in discovering the past - from
excavation to interpretation. This approach provides a unique experience for the
visitors - an introduction to the life of the Neolithic community in the original location
on one side, and on the other side - it offers an opportunity to get acquainted
with the methods and processes of discovering the past.

u neposrednoj blizini sonde XIX (sl. 1).
naselja.

AB - This paper presents new results on the research of Late Neolithic houses at the site of Drenovac near Paraćin, central Serbia. We discuss remains of five houses with different degrees of preservation, which directly influenced obtained data and possibilities for interpretation. The extensive excavations enabled the investigation of two houses in their entirety that offered valuable information about the internal organization of space, installations and movable finds. One of the most important results was the identification of two-story structures.

AB - The Neolithic settlement at Drenovac, in the region of the Middle Morava Valley in
central Serbia, is notable for its size and long-term occupation. It is a deeply stratified site, with
cultural deposits of up to 6.50 m in depth, and spans two main periods of occupation, separated
by a hiatus of ca. 700 years: the Early Neolithic Starčevo culture (6100–5900 BC) and the Late
Neolithic Vinča culture (5300/5200–4700/4500 BC). In this paper we will discuss the complex
stratigraphy and dynamics of the formation processes, settlement history and the use of living
space in Drenovac. These first insights are based on recent excavations, geomagnetic survey and
reconnaissance. Extensive research into the latest building horizon at Drenovac, dating to the Late
Neolithic (Vinča-Pločnik phase), provided the most valuable data on settlement size and spatial
organisation.

Biography of a Painted Vessel from Starcevo: Discovering Layers of Meaning

AB - Scientific interest in the painted pottery of the Starcevo culture in Serbia dates back to the very beginnings of research and the first works on the relative-chronological systematization of the Early and Middle Neolithic of the central Balkans. This paper presents the deconstruction of our established notion of painted ceramics as the ultimate parameter of relative-chronological dating, the most representative material reflection of the cultural identity of the people of Starcevo culture and the highest achievements of Starcevo culture. The paper discusses circumstances and archaeological practices through which this ingrained view and knowledge of painted pottery was formed. The research is based on the analysis of the biography of a painted vessel from the Starcevo-Grad site, having in mind that a detailed life history of an object can shed light on wider phenomena in the archaeological discipline. The aim of this paper is to remind that objects do not have a single essential meaning, but that their meaning shifts and builds through changes in the historical and social context, as well as through changes of actors gathered around certain practices in which the objects are used. The biography of the painted vessel is therefore viewed as a series of assemblages of relations in two planes, through which its identity and layers of meaning were built. The first plane is the Neolithic, in which the focus is on the practices of painting and use, and the second is her life in the role of an archaeological artifact, during which she moves from the sphere of scientific research and musealization to the sphere of negotiating contemporary cultural identities. By applying a new analytical approach, we discovered that this vessel was not very skilfully and carefully painted, and that as such it does not testify to the highest achievements of Starcevo culture, but to a social practice, learning, apprentices and mastering the skill of pottery painting. Therefore, I believe that by reducing painted pottery to relative-chronological parameters and luxury objects, we lose sight of the possibilities through which we can build much more diverse interpretations of the past.

Odnos arheološke teorije i prakse razmatran je kroz analizu povezanosti koncepata hronologije, stratigrafije i arheološke kulture, kroz studiju „mešanja“ starčevačke i vinčanske grnčarije u Pavlovcu.
AB - The subject of this doctoral dissertation is a biography of the painted pottery of the Early and Middle Neolithic of the central Balkans, from production to archaeological interventions. The aim of the research is to 1) review approaches and conclusions about painted pottery in Serbian archeology; 2) shift the focus of research from painted pottery as "chronologically sensitive" findings to specific knowledge, skills and practices and 4) consider the connection between archeological theory and practice through ceramic studies. For this purpose, collections of painted pottery from the sites Starčevo-Grad, Grivac and Pavlovac-Gumnište were systematically analyzed. The research is based on macroscopic analyzes of the chaîne opératoire, traces of use/secondary use /repairs and taphonomy, as well as contextual analysis of the painted pottery from Pavlovac. Research has shown that painted vessels often have complex biographies. There are some changes in raw material preparation, painting techniques, and paints. It is up to us to further understand these changes and explore the extent to which they are related to other aspects of the life of the Starčevo communities. The painted vessels are shaped in a variety of ways, including the coiling technique. They were painted by differently skilled and attentive potters. They are not exclusively used as display vesseles and have been used in a variety of food preparation, storage, serving and consumption activities. Sometimes broken vessels have been repaired, thus extending their life span. Although painted vessels probably had some kind of social, cultural and symbolic importance and value, there were no rules against recycling broken pots. These variations warn us that based on similarities in style, we should not automatically assume similarities in practice. The relation between archeological theory and practice was discussed through the analysis of the connection between the concepts of chronology, stratigraphy and archeological culture, through the study of the "mixing" of the Starčevo and Vinča pottery in Pavlovac. It has been shown that the analysis of pottery taphonomy can play a significant role in understanding the formation processes, and the wider issues of contacts and continuity between the Starčevo and Vinča communities.

Odnos arheološke teorije i prakse razmatran je kroz analizu povezanosti koncepata hronologije, stratigrafije i arheološke kulture, kroz studiju „mešanja“ starčevačke i vinčanske grnčarije u Pavlovcu. Pokazalo se da analiza tafonomije grnčarije može imati značajnu ulogu u razumevanju formacionih procesa, i širih pitanja kontakata i kontinuiteta između starčevačkih i vinčanskih zajednica., The subject of this doctoral dissertation is a biography of the painted pottery of the Early and Middle Neolithic of the central Balkans, from production to archaeological interventions. It has been shown that the analysis of pottery taphonomy can play a significant role in understanding the formation processes, and the wider issues of contacts and continuity between the Starčevo and Vinča communities.",

AB - In the current study, samples from three Neolithic settlements located in different
geographical areas in Serbia; Star~evo–Grad, Drenovac and Pavlovac–Gumni{te, were selected in order to
determine whether the materials used to seal and repair ceramic pots from this specific region were of the
same botanical source as in other regions of Neolithic Greece and the Balkans; and whether they were produced
using the same technology as the other similar resinous materials. The ancient organic residues were
analysed using the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) technique, while the determination of
their composition was made by identifying diagnostic components (biomarkers). The study revealed that the
resinous material was tar produced by the pyrolysis of birch bark.

AB - The recognition of subsistence strategies, diet and culinary practices is one of the
most important questions in the study of the development of Late Neolithic communities in the Middle
Morava Valley. Pots serving as containers involved in many everyday activities related to preparing or the
processing of food are an optimal and suitable source of information in this regard. However, the determination
of vessel functions is usually a very problematic task, due to the preservation of the material, their
fragmentation, scarcity of use-wear traces and heterogeneity of pot shape. Moreover, most of the Late
Vin~a pots seem to have fulfilled more than just one established purpose. Thus, the aim of this paper is to
present the results of organic residue analysis (GC, GC-MS and GC-C-IRMS) to examine the use of pottery
involved in the preparation, storage and consumption of different types of foodstuffs by the Late Vin~a
communities. Pottery from two Late Neolithic sites of Drenovac and Motel Slatina in the Middle Morava
Valley, Central Serbia were chosen for the organic residue analysis. Vessels are shown to have been used to
process a range of commodities including beeswax, ruminant dairy fats, ruminant adipose fats and nonruminant
adipose fats. A predominance of the processing of dairy products was observed at both sites, in
vessels of varying sizes and types.

Painted pottery and culinary practices: Use-alteration analysis of painted pottery from the site of Starčevo-Grad

AB - This paper presents a study designed to test the assumptions that painted pottery
was stationary and non-utilitarian, or used only as tableware. Following the object biographical
approach, I investigated how the biographies of these vessels can inform
us about use activities and whether these activities are linked to food practices. The
archaeological contexts of painted pottery from sites in the Central Balkans most
often do not reflect the use of painted pottery, but rather the way it was discarded.
The only way to investigate its actual function was to look at the vessels themselves.
Based on this recognition, use-alteration analysis was performed on painted pottery
from the site of Starčevo-Grad, Serbia. This case study allowed me to investigate the
‘life-experiences’ of individual vessels and obtain the first direct evidence of how
painted vessels were used at this particular site.
